Stop the Unjustified Killing of Lakeway's Deer!

  • by: Dave and Rita Cross
  • recipient: Lakeway, TX Mayor Joe Bain and the Deer Management Committee
For fifteen years, the Deer Management Committee has contracted a trapper to bait, trap, and kill deer in Lakeway, Texas. Many people in Lakeway are concerned that the deer herd is being thinned out too much. Most of us moved into Lakeway because we enjoy seeing the wildlife in the community, and we don't feel that there are so many deer here that it has become a problem. In fact, we are not seeing nearly as many deer today as we have in the past, so it makes us question whether this deer trapping is necessary.

Before permits are renewed for another year of baiting, trapping, and killing deer in the area, the citizens of Lakeway demand that a deer census be performed. Only once we have all the information, should methods be discussed for how to manage the herd size. There are plenty of non-lethal ways to manage a deer population.

As it stands, the entire "deer management" process is fraught with stress, suffering and death for these animals. The deer have by nets dropped on them, the bucks' horns are cut off, they are placed in a trailer where they are held before being trucked about an hour away. There, the deer are killed and processed. Some of them die of fear as well as from injuries on this trip to slaughter.

Lakeway citizens have repeatedly asked the Lakeway Deer Management Committee to conduct a formal deer count, but our pleas have fallen on deaf ears. Their stance sends the message loud and clear that killing is their primary objective, not conservation or humane treatment of the animals. Please sign this petition to demand that the Lakeway Deer Management Committee conduct a formal deer census before determining this year's deer management strategy.
