Stop the Trade in Blood Diamonds

Target: U.S. Senate; House of Representatives
Sponsored by: Care2
The diamond trade has fueled civil wars and destroyed countries, killing close to 4 million people and displacing millions more. "Conflict" or "blood diamonds" have funded some of the most devastating wars in African history.

After diamond-fueled wars in Angola, Sierra Leone, and the DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo), the diamond industry agreed in 2002 to regulation of the entire supply chain of diamonds through the Kimberley Process.

Despite these efforts, the trade in blood diamonds continues.
Global Witness and Amnesty International recently reported that $23 million worth of blood diamonds are being smuggled each year from the Ivory Coast of Africa and sold worldwide.

As the largest consumer of diamonds, the U.S. must take the lead in strengthening the Kimberley Process to require verification of industry compliance, and to strengthen enforcement of the U.S. Clean Diamond Trade Act.

Call on Congress to finally bring an end to the blood diamond trade!

Dear Congressmember,

Blood diamonds have already fueled civil wars and destroyed countries, killing over 4 million people and displacing millions more. Knowing this, I want assurance that the diamonds I buy are conflict-free.

It's clear that the diamond industry cannot be trusted to properly regulate the sale and trade of blood diamonds. We need government regulation.

As your constituent, I urge to you to support legislation that will make this possible.

Sincerely,

No one should be killed for a gemstone. This is crazy. Protections must be in place. I have diamonds but now I buy top grade cz's. They rival the best diamonds.

So people living in Africa will not be killed over this stupid gem that only the rich can afford. There is Moissanite or cubic zirconia to buy for us poor folks if we want to wear jewelry to feel good and impress ourselves or others around us. Diamonds are not a girl's best friend like it was back in the 1940's. Thank you.

Diamonds are a girl's best friend but they are not worth dying for. Let's find another way.
