The Diolkos just after the excavation (~1960) and today!

Save and Restore Ancient Diolkos

Target:
Costantine Caramanlis, Prime Minister. Greece
Sponsored by:
General information (not part of the petition):

The Diolkos, the unique paved way of 600 B.C. which enabled ships to be moved overland across the Isthmus of Corinth from sea to sea, is  crumbling into the water at its western end.

After the excavation (~1960), great part of the monument was left at the mercy of its position near the Corinth Canal. Rescue actions continued to be denied even when the erosion had left considerable portions of this registered archaeological site in a state of demolition!

Although seemingly wishing the monument's restoration, for years the relevant services of the Greek Ministry of Culture kept themselves totally unprepared to protect the monument or apply for funding! They even lacked knowledge of how the monument looked after its excavation.

Having by now at their heels Justice Authorities and the Public Administration Control Body, the Ministry APPEARS struggling to understand the monument's needs. Officially, there is some movimentation but the monument is still unprotected and exposed with no real guarantee as to the future. (Updated 30 april 2008).

With Diolkos' decay going on, our petition is:

We declare ourselves against the mentalities and practices that lead to the destruction of the world's heritage and we ask the Greek Prime Minister to exercise his authority so that, without any further delays and hypocrisy, the Diolkos is finally saved and restored.

To the Greek Prime Minister

Sir, The ancient diolkos, a unique monument of the end of the 7th century BC that enabled Greek warships and merchantmen to be moved overland across the Isthmus of Corinth from sea to sea, is progressively crumbling into the water at its western end.

We declare ourselves against the mentalities and practices that lead to the destruction of the world's heritage and we ask you to exercise your Authority so that, without any further delays and hypocrisy, the Diolkos is finally saved and restored.

There is no bigger curse for a country, than forgetting its history and its roots.

Diolkos, this 'railway' of the antiquity, is unique among ancient transportation systems, and bears a strong testimony of the intelligence and ability of ancient Greeks to use the technology of their days for military and commercial purposes. Therefore it deserves to be preserved.
