Request that the Federal and Provincial government provide Mental Health services and better living conditions for Attawapiskat residents!!!

The residents of Attawapiskat are subject to substandard living conditions, where merely living is a daily struggle. There is no running water, no sewage system and their housing is subpar--with most homes subject to mold, leaking roofs and absolutely no insulation to guard against the harsh winters. Some residents are even forced to live in cramped living conditions, or inside tents, as the need for housing outweighs the amount of housing provided. This is simply unacceptable! The youth have simply lost all hope and have resorted to suicide as a means to end their daily struggle. The federal and provincial government need to get their acts together and provide funding to Mental Health services and adequate living conditions! We hereby petition the government to take immediate action upon the current substandard conditions in Attawapiskat, by providing access to Mental Health services and adequate housing.

Update #18 years ago
Attawapiskat declares state of emergency after suicide attempts. The federal and Ontario health ministers said Sunday that a crisis team, including mental health nurses and social workers, was being flown immediately to the James Bay community of about 2,000! This is wonderful news!
