Dear President Bush and other elected officials:

We, the undersigned citizens of the United States of America, would like you to change the smoking age to from 18 to 21. We feel that this would decrease the amount of minors getting their hands on cigarettes. We also feel that most (if not all) 18 year olds are in colleges where smoking is prohibited on campus.

1,013 11:58 am PST, Dec 11 Michael Thomas valencia California This petition is completely STUPID and uncalled for. If people cannot make their OWN CHOICES at 18, they should not only be stopped from smoking but also eliminated from the human race, their useless and moronic genes weeded out of existence. May the good patron saint of cigars and even cigarettes strike down this INANE petition and those who think they are doing good.
1,012 5:53 am PST, Dec 11 Anonymous Lake Odessa Michigan the human body is not yet fully developed until 21 so it only makes sense to start destroying it at 21
1,011 11:57 am PST, Dec 9 Julie Roeber Shelby Twp. Michigan i am signing this petition becuase i believe that the smoking age should be brought back up to 21 insteasd of 18.
1,010 4:44 am PST, Dec 5 Kelly Miehl Downingtown Pennsylvania I have seen too many people suffer and die as a result of COPD, lung cancer and smoking.
1,009 3:26 pm PST, Dec 4 Doris Hutchinson Downingtown Pennsylvania Cancer is an ugly & deadly condition. If I can help someone not smoke for 3 extra years, I will!!!!!! They should be illegal!!!!
1,008 9:10 pm PST, Nov 29 Anonymous Ovilla Texas Persons under the age of 21 are not mature enough to understand the dire consequences done to their bodies from smoking, nor do they understand the harm they are doing to all those around them with second hand smoke. Therefore, I am in full agreement to raise the smoking age to 21.

1,005 11:19 am PST, Nov 20 Angie Bessenger Florence South Carolina I personally feel that smoking is something someone else is doing that can damage my life. We know different types of accidents happen, but if we can limit the damage to our body, don't we? We go to the doctor or hospital to improve our health, so why not do what we individually can? Raising the age will not help completely, but it is a start to banning smoking in South Carolina!

999 8:37 am PDT, Oct 30 Adam Chapman McHenry Illinois I known way to many kids who have ruined their live by smoking. I think it should be abolished, but raising the legal age wouldn't hurt.
998 6:48 pm PDT, Oct 29 Anonymous Ticonderoga New York Smoking should be banned.. But the higher the age limit the better.. keep young people from dieing from lung cancer or even copd.
996 3:42 pm PDT, Oct 10 Heather Smith Galltin Tennessee I think that the smoking age should be left alone it is the younger adults choice whether they want to smoke or not making the smoking age 21 isn't gonna stop anything thats just gonna make kids want to grow up faster than they already do so they can be legal , I think when a person or persons are 18 they are grown enough to make their own choices it shouldn't be left to the states to make choices of their life for them

973 2:30 am PDT, Jun 11 Georgia Forsee Desoto Illinois Our country's war on drugs places great emphasis on arresting people for smoking marijuana. In the last decade, 6.5 million Americans have been arrested on marijuana charges, a greater number than the entire populations of Alaska, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont and Wyoming combined. In 2000, state and local law enforcement arrested 734,498 people for marijuana violations. This is an increase of 800 percent since 1980, and is the highest ever recorded by the FBI. As has been the case throughout the 1990s, the overwhelming majority of those charged with marijuana violations in 2000-- 646,042 Americans (88 %) -- were for simple possession. The remaining 12% (88,456 Americans) were for "sale/manufacture", an FBI category which includes marijuana grown for personal use or purely medical purposes. These new FBI statistics indicate that one marijuana smoker is arrested every 45 seconds in America. Taken together, the total number of marijuana arrests for 2000 far exceeded the combined number of arrests for violent crimes, including murder, manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault. Like most Americans, people who smoke marijuana also pay taxes, love and support their families, and work hard to make a better life for their children. Suddenly they are arrested, jailed and treated like criminals solely because of their recreational drug of choice. State agencies frequently step in and declare children of marijuana smokers to be "in danger", and many children are placed into foster homes as a result. This causes enormous pain, suffering and financial hardship for millions of American families. It also engenders distrust and disrespect for the law and for the criminal justice system overall. Responsible marijuana smokers present no threat or danger to America or its children, and there is no reason to treat them as criminals, or to take their children away. As a society we need to find ways to discourage personal conduct of all kinds that is abusive or harmful to others. Responsible marijuana smokers are not the problem and it is time to stop arresting them.

966 8:16 pm PDT, May 15 Z Somes Roseville California Recently I participated in a speech and debate about this topic. And the fact is millions of teens are smoking and ruining their lives while affecting the lives of others. Not to mention that secondhand smoke kills 22 million people each year is one large reason why teens should not smoke. Please end the peer pressure teens must face constantly from their "friends". Sign this petition.
965 11:38 am PDT, May 13 Robert Hopkin lincoln   i dont care what country your in kids will smoke if they want to.if the age is 16 then they go to a mate or someone who is 16 to buy them , if it 18 they go to someone who is 18 and so on. and someone always will buy them for kids bcos they have the same views as everyone here
964 9:57 am PDT, May 8 steve odell glendale heights Illinois iam a smoker and i started when i was about 12 i am now 17 if someone wants to smoke then they should be aloowed to smoke no matter how old europe doesnt have these retarted laws and we claim to be "THE LAND OF THE FREE" we should be able to drink at 18 and smoke when there tall enough to reach over the counter to hand the cashier the money smokin also gives people a way to calm down when they get pissed off if AMERICANS cant smoke even at 18 then they cant go into the military and everyone that smokes knows all the negitive effects of smokin i dont think theres anyone out there that doesnt no that smokin is bad for u and if they raise the smokin age then they should raise the age were u become a adult because i dont think that ur a adult and can move out on ur own if u dont have all the freedoms of AMERICA u should also be able to smoke in public places and people that smoke can also play sports becuase i am the leading wide reciever on my school football team most smokers just choose to be lazy make smoking there exuse and then there lungs do really get bad and if smokin kills well we need another way of controlin the population just think how over populated the world would be if 400,000 people didnt die every yr from smokin and the thousands from war every year as sad as that sounds the world needs a way to control human population and by the age of i would say 15-16 people who smoke then will smoke for as long as they want to and they will quit if they want to and most people that want to raise the legal smokin age r either health nuts and dont want to or there 40-50yrs old and it would effect them so i think it should be up to the individual person
963 8:42 am PDT, May 8 Stupid Sheep New Jersey is racist Massachusetts This Petition is so dumb wow people smoke big deal it shows a clear cultural bias held by a suburban elitist group. First if kids want to smoke they will smoke and the more you ban smoking the more "cool" it gets to kids. Also in America most 18 year olds are not in college only about 1/4 of Americans have college degrees and those people for the most part have money to spend on other ways to remove stress. For people without the money smoking is a cheap alternative to a vacation in the bahamas. so in short passing laws to ban or tax smoking is a classist system.
