Demand the government scrapes tax exemptions to big polluters to help save the environment

An Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) submission has recommended scrapping special exemptions and tax credits for aviation, oil and gas, and mining sectors.

ACF argues that unfair ‘hand-outs’ to big polluters encourages the destruction of the environment.

The ACF proposes a number of measures that would benefit both the environment and economy concurrently by scrapping the hand-outs. They include the creation of a threatened species recovery fund as well as an Indigenous rangers program.

ACF argue that cutting unfair handouts to industries that encourage pollution would help the environment while saving $5.2bn a year from the federal budget, which would also relieve ordinary families of much of the tax burden.

The last federal budget cut funding toward several significant environmental programs – these could be reinstated by taxing big polluters.

The Australian government should stop answering to the demands of the big polluters and start listening to the people.
