Tell Governor Brown: Ban Fracking Now

California Governor Jerry Brown's recently proposed fracking rules take a narrow, oil industry-friendly approach to fracking -- leaving California's people, wildlife and climate in danger. The rules would permit fracking, acidization and other high-risk extraction practices to spread across the state.

The safest way forward for California is to ban fracking now.

The governor's proposed regulations do not address the large increase in deadly air pollutants like particulate matter, ozone and air toxics that will accompany a fracking boom. The Central Valley and Los Angeles Basin, where industry is poised for a massive expansion of drilling, already suffer from the worst air quality in the nation.

The regulations also attempt to rubber-stamp and fast-track multiple well-stimulation projects with a single approval and without adequately studying the impact of each frack project -- and the regulations do not require disclosure of complete chemical information to the public until after fracking.

The best way to protect California's communities, wildlife and climate is to make our voices heard while the draft rules are still being reviewed.

Take action today: Call on Gov. Brown to stop fracking and other extreme fossil-fuel extraction techniques.
Governor Brown:

I am writing to urge you to reconsider the draft you recently proposed for regulating fracking, acidization and other well-stimulation processes. The safest way forward for California is a ban on these inherently dangerous extraction methods.

Fracking is tied to air and water pollution, and it releases huge volumes of methane, a dangerously potent greenhouse gas. New fracking and acidization technologies are also opening up huge new sources of dirty oil in California's Monterey Shale formation to extraction and combustion. These proposed regulations fall far short of protecting California's air, water, wildlife and communities.

For one, the regulations do not address the large increase in deadly air pollutants like particulate matter, ozone and air toxics that will accompany a fracking boom. The Central Valley and Los Angeles Basin, where industry is poised for a massive expansion of drilling, already suffer from the worst air quality in the nation.

The regulations also fast-track multiple well-stimulation jobs with a single approval and without adequately studying the impact of each frack job -- and the regulations do not clearly provide for full disclosure of all environmental and health risks prior to the approval of a permit to frack, as required by existing law.

Finally the proposed regulations would do nothing to reduce the climate impacts of extracting and burning up to 15 billion barrels of oil. California must remain a leader in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The only sufficient regulation would be a prohibition on fracking and other extreme fossil-fuel extraction techniques for California. Please -- ban fracking now.
