Keep Guns Away From Dangerous People

January 8, 2012 is the one-year anniversary of the attempted assassination of Arizona Representative Gabrielle Giffords. Jared Loughner, a troubled Arizona teen, opened fire as Giffords met with constituents, killing six people and injuring 13. Congress could have avoided this tragedy, had they enacted a law that would have prevented dangerous people like Loughner from buying a gun in the first place.

It was clear to Loughner's friends, classmates and colleagues that he suffered from some kind of mental illness. After a series of violent outbursts which brought him into contact with the police, Pima County Community College deemed him incapable of continuing his studies. But despite these signs, Loughner legally obtained the gun he useed to kill six innocent people and critically injure others.

This kind of tragedy must never reoccur. Call on Congress to require an airtight background check of those purchasing guns so that it never will.
Dear Member of Congress,

I am writing to urge you to implement an airtight background check process for those seeking to purchase guns. Especially in light of the tragic assassination attempt on Gabrielle Giffords, it is imperative that those who attempt to purchase guns must pass a thorough background check.

It was clear to Jared Loughner's friends, classmates and colleagues that he was suffering from some kind of mental illness. Due to a series of violent outbursts which brought him into contact with police, he was deemed incapable of continuing to study at Pima County Community College. But the gun that Jared would use to kill six innocent bystanders and critically injure several more was legally obtained.

Please require everyone who wishes to purchase a gun in the United States to pass a thorough background check first.

Sincerely,
