Support Funding for Climate Bill

Poor communities and countries didn't create the climate change problem, but they have to deal with the consequences of our pollution: more floods, droughts, debilitating storms, crop loss and disease.

The historic climate change and clean energy bill -- on its way to a vote in Congress very soon -- provides some resources to help vulnerable communities prepare for climate-related disasters. But it's far from enough!

We need more solutions like early warning systems for storms, innovative irrigation techniques for drought, and funds to help poor people develop clean energy alternatives.

It's time for America to be a global leader on climate change -- and it all starts with protecting poor and vulnerable communities worldwide. Tell Congress to increase funding to help vulnerable communities build their resilience to climate change.
Dear Representative,

As your constituent, I am writing to ask for your support of The American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 (H.R. 2454) and to urge you to support more robust investments in international adaptation and clean technology for poor and vulnerable communities to prepare for the effects of global warming and leapfrog to a cleaner development pathway.

Substantial funding for international adaptation and clean technology cooperation is key to negotiating an effective global agreement on climate change that reduces global greenhouse gas emissions.

It is also key to saving millions of lives and dollars down the road. A recent Oxfam report forecasts the number of people affected by climate-related disasters to rise more than 50 percent by 2015, to an average of 375 million people a year, threatening to overwhelm emergency response and humanitarian aid systems. Studies show that a dollar of investment now can save up to seven dollars later in avoided or reduced disaster impacts.

Climate change is a global problem requiring a global solution. American leadership on climate change and clean energy will help rebuild our nation's standing in the world and advance our other economic, foreign and environmental policy priorities.

Thank you for your consideration.
