Demand The Release Of Chinese Anti-corruption Activist Liu Ping

Jailed for fighting corruption in China, Liu Ping, mother and Chinese anti-corruption activist has been sentenced to 6 and a half years in prison for organising a demonstration aimed at promoting greater government transparency.

Her only daughter, Liao Minyue, was able to visit her at Jiangxi Nanchang Women's Prison on 18 August where she found her mother looking pale and thin, but she was not allowed to ask her mum about her health. Liu Ping is being denied access to the medical treatment she needs in detention, and there are serious concerns for her health.

Liu Ping has refused to give up advocating for human rights despite frequent intimidation, beatings and illegal detention for participating in these activities. Liu Ping has united with other activists to help the weak, challenge corruption, and bring hope to others through her peaceful work.

But now Liu needs your help. Join thousands of people like you around the world calling on China to provide vital medical treatment for Liu in prison and demanding her release.
Your Excellency,

Please raise the case of Liu Ping with the Head of Xinyu Municipal Public Security Bureau, and the Xinyu City Mayor and urge them to release Liu Ping immediately and unconditionally, as she has been imprisoned solely for exercising her rights to freedom of expressions and association.

In addition, the authorities must ensure Liu Ping is not subjected to torture and other ill-treatment in prison, and is allowed access to her family and any medical treatment that she may require.

I also urge you to raise with them the need to take effective measures to ensure that all human rights defenders, including Liu Ping, can carry out their peaceful activities without fear of hindrance, intimidation, arbitrary detention or imprisonment, in line with the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders.

Sincerely,
[Your name]
Update #19 years ago
24 November 2014: Liu Ping's brother was able to visit her on 24 November. She had gained some weight, but still looked frail and like she was recovering from a serious illness. She said she was fine and for the family not to worry about her. Liu Ping said that she was not allowed to talk about her health or treatment in prison, as otherwise the visit would be stopped.
