Combat Anti-Semitism in Europe

Jews in many European countries are questioning whether they have a secure future after witnessing one hate-fueled attack after another.

Living in justifiable fear from a deadly and dangerous resurgence in anti-Semitism, many Jews are choosing to abandon their European homelands. In France alone, over 7,000 left in 2014—up dramatically from 3,289 in 2013 and 1,817 in 2012—with even greater numbers expected to leave this year.

Alarmingly, being physically attacked simply for being Jewish is a fear shared by one-third of Europe's Jews, according a survey released in 2013 by the European Union's Agency for Fundamental Rights. Given the recent string of deadly attacks in 2014 and 2015, if those same respondents were questioned again today that percentage would likely be much higher.

It's unsettling and deeply disturbing to see this tidal wave of anti-Semitic violence and hate affecting a number of European countries.

It is critical that you act now. The very future of European Jewry is at stake.
In light of the recent and disturbing findings of the European Union's Fundamental Rights Agency survey of anti-Semitism in Europe, it is imperative that all European Union institutions and its member states take a strong stand to enforce anti-Semitic violence laws and against the extreme rhetoric and propaganda that fuel the fires of hate.

As detailed in the report, nearly half of Europe's Jews fear verbal attacks or harassment in public, and one-third worry about being physically attacked. This has forced many Jews either to flee or to consider emigration from their beloved homelands to escape the growing resentment and violence. In France alone, over 7,000 fled in 2014—up dramatically from 3,289 in 2013 and 1,817 in 2012. Many experts believe that number could more than double in 2015.

Anti-Semitism, the world's oldest and most pernicious form of racism, is leading to barbaric acts of murder and violence against innocent victims. It continues to be manifested through attacks against Jewish religious freedom, traditions and customs such as shechita (kosher slaughter) and circumcision. Vandalism against synagogues, Jewish cemeteries and schools are becoming all too common. Such acts have caused death, injury, destruction and emotional suffering.

In keeping with the EU's motto, "United in Diversity," I implore you to use the power of your position to ensure that Europe's Jews are protected and free from the anti-Semitic violence that is currently flourishing in Europe.
