Tell Leader McConnell: My Democracy is Not for Sale!

The Supreme Court's decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission will allow corporate special interests to spend an unlimited amount of money to influence campaigns.

It will drown out the voices of the American people and roll back decades of progress to ensure elections are fair. Democrats have condemned the decision and proposed legislation to limit its impact.

Unfortunately, many Republicans applaud Citizens United vs. the FEC. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell calls it a "monumental" step toward "restoring the First Amendment [free speech] rights [of corporations and unions.]" Tell McConnell that unlimited spending is not free speech.

President Obama has rightfully referred to this decision as "an assault on democracy," and that he "could not think of anything more devastating to the public interest."

Dear Leader McConnell and the Republican leadership:

In Citizens United vs. the Federal Election Commission, the Supreme Court makes a grave error that threatens our entire political system. Corporations can now spend millions of dollars supporting candidates of their choosing, without regard for those pesky, democracy saving, campaign contribution restrictions.

Democrats have proposed legislation to limit this spending by requiring shareholder approval and advertisement disclaimers informing the viewer who is sponsoring the ad. (similar to those in place for candidates)

Republicans however, have signaled their intention to oppose this legislation, and have expressed support for the Supreme Court's decision.

Unlimited corporate spending on American elections is not free speech. It is in fact very expensive speech, and it drowns out the voices of the American people.

I urge you to support legislation to limit the impact of Citizens United vs. the FEC. Eight in ten Americans oppose this terrible decision.
