Stop Bolton Now! Oppose John Bolton's Nomination to UN

UPDATE: They're listening to us! On April 19th, Senators put principles over politics and agreed serious allegations against Bolton deserve a thorough investigation. Opposition to Bolton's nomination is growing! We need your continued support to defeat this terrible nominee - please sign today!
On March 7, President Bush shocked the world by nominating John Bolton, who's dedicated his life to undermining the United Nations, to be our UN Ambassador. Bolton has made a career of ridiculing our work with other nations to achieve our goals. If Bolton is confirmed by the Senate, he will isolate America in the world, leaving us without partners to work with to keep us safe. In fact, 59 former American diplomats, from both Democratic and Republican administrations, have written a letter urging the Senate to oppose Bolton's nomination.

Just who is John Bolton?
Throughout his career in the Departments of Justice and State and in his personal writings, John R. Bolton has repeatedly belittled international institutions and undermined global cooperation. Let Bolton tell you in his own words how he feels about the United Nations:
  • "If the UN secretary building in New York lost 10 stories, it wouldn't make a bit of difference."
  • "There is no such thing as the United Nations. There is an international community that occasionally can be led by the only real power left in the world and that is the United States when it suits our interest and we can get others to go along." (both from: 1994 Global Structures Convocation, Washington, DC.)

  • Bolton's nomination is a serious threat to America's time-honored tradition of working with other nations to solve global problems. His obvious and well-known contempt for global cooperation could prove disastrous to U.S. national security. Sign this petition today to tell your Senators to oppose Bolton's nomination to the United Nations.

    Dear Senator,

I am writing to urge you to oppose the nomination of John Bolton as US Ambassador to the United Nations. Working with the United Nations and our allies is critical, and John Bolton has spent his whole life trying to undo that work. Bolton is not the man for the job.

A more effective UN and a productive U.S.-UN relationship are essential for a successful American foreign policy. But John Bolton would rather retire the United Nations than reform it.

Bolton has made his contempt for the UN all too clear, arguing that "nothing more should be paid to the U.N. system." (The Washington Times, 1998), and proudly declaring, "The secretariat building in New York has 38 stories. If you lost ten stories today it wouldn't make a bit of difference." ( Feb 1994 Global Structures Convocation, Washington, DC.)

I urge you, for the sake of our national security and our relationships with the international community, to oppose John Bolton's nomination.

    Thank you.
