Dear Senator,
I am writing to urge you to oppose the nomination of John Bolton as US Ambassador to the United Nations. Working with the United Nations and our allies is critical, and John Bolton has spent his whole life trying to undo that work. Bolton is not the man for the job.
A more effective UN and a productive U.S.-UN relationship are essential for a successful American foreign policy. But John Bolton would rather retire the United Nations than reform it.
Bolton has made his contempt for the UN all too clear, arguing that "nothing more should be paid to the U.N. system." (The Washington Times, 1998), and proudly declaring, "The secretariat building in New York has 38 stories. If you lost ten stories today it wouldn't make a bit of difference." ( Feb 1994 Global Structures Convocation, Washington, DC.)
I urge you, for the sake of our national security and our relationships with the international community, to oppose John Bolton's nomination.
Thank you.
