Pledge To Speak Up Against Domestic Violence

It is estimated 1 in 4 women experiences domestic violence over the course of her lifetime. Domestic violence knows no boundaries: it affects women and girls of all socio-economic classes, races, ethnicities, and religions. Abuse, threats and violence often follow women beyond their front door and into their daily lives, including the workplace.

Though pervasive, domestic violence is all too often ignored -- treated as a "private" domestic issue, bruises hidden under clothing and makeup, fear camouflaged with a feigned smile.

Abusers depend on silence... It's time to bring domestic violence out of the silence. It's time to speak up, open our eyes, and amplify the voices of millions of survivors.

Pledge to be an anti-violence advocate during Domestic Violence Awareness Month and beyond!
I pledge to be an anti-violence advocate during Domestic Violence Awareness Month and beyond.

I pledge to open my eyes. To recognize that violence against women has pervaded our culture -- from advertisements to music lyrics. To understand this is wrong and damaging.

I pledge to be aware AND spread awareness. To know that domestic violence knows no boundaries. To look for the signs of an abusive relationship among my neighbors, coworkers, friends and family.

I pledge to support, not judge, survivors of domestic violence, understanding the survivor is not to blame. To shift our gaze from the victim to the abuser, asking "why did the abuser use violence?" rather than "why did the victim stay?"

I pledge to speak up when I witness an abusive act. To respectfully provide the number to the Domestic Violence hotline if I suspect abuse. To call the authorities if necessary.
