Move Forward in Creating Animal Cruelty Registry in Illinois As Step for Safety of Animals

  • by: Sue Lee

I personally was a resident of Illinois until recent years and have always been an animal lover my entire life (which is a very long time!) That being said, I find it appalling that so much animal abuse continues to occur and feel that if we can work with legislators, state-by-state in stopping such abuse, we can finally protect poor defenseless animals.

Illinois currently does not have an animal cruelty registry although the abuse statewide is still on the rise. You can read more at http://www.isba.org/publications/barnews/2008/09/animalcrueltyissuesaired and other concerns at http://www.sj-r.com/article/20140116/NEWS/140119538.  The information shows that some talks have been initiated in an attempt to create a database for animal abusers in the state but never put into law.

An animal cruelty registry should be similar in prominence as that of registries for other criminals as sex offenders and child abusers.  Anyone guilty of animal abuse, cruelty or neglect would and should be listed on this database for a lifetime, keeping it updated with personal information over the years.  Anyone on the list would then be banned from any future ownership of a pet as well as never being allowed to even care for or working with animals for a lifetime.  This is the only way we will ever be able to stop the abuse of those who cannot speak or protect themselves.

My goal in this petition is to encourage the Illinois State Legislators to move forward with the implementation and strict enforcement of an animal cruelty registry as a crucial step in protecting animal’s state-by-state, until we can have such a database on a national level.  You can help in protecting our nation’s animals by signing and sharing this petition, adding your own thoughts and comments.   Let’s be a very loud voice for the voiceless and defenseless.

Illinois State Legislators – I strongly urge you to implement and strictly enforce an animal cruelty registry.  Such a database should be similar in prominence as that of registries for other criminals as sex offenders and child abusers.
