Save Lives: Ensure Mothers and Children in Extreme Poverty Have Good Health Care

  • by: ONE (OLD)

Every year, an estimated 358,000 mothers die from complications during child birth and 8.1 million children die before their fifth birthday.

The statistics are both tragic and daunting: Women in sub-Saharan Africa have a one in 22 chance of dying in childbirth, and children regularly face diseases such as pneumonia, diarrhea and malaria that are no longer burdens in rich countries.

But there is hope, if we are willing to invest in the health of mothers and children in the world's poorest countries. Millions of lives could be saved if technologies and services well known in wealthy countries were made available to mothers and children in the world's poorest regions.

If moms, dads and families around the world stand together, we can give millions of children around the world the chance to lead happy, healthy lives.

Let congress know: supporting maternal and child health in the world's poorest countries is too important to ignore.
