Stop Bush's Cuts to the Endangered Species Act

Target: President-Elect Barack Obama
Sponsored by: Sierra Club
All year long, we've been worried that last minute plans by the Bush Administration that would undermine the integrity of the Endangered Species Act.

Well, they've finally done it. The Bush Administration enacted a last-minute ruling, which cuts U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service scientists out of the review process for determining if new mining, logging and construction projects pose a threat to endangered animals. What this really means is that political appointees, not scientists, will determine what poses a risk to endangered animals.

The threat to our wildlife could not be greater. We need your support right now to help make sure this ruling is NEVER implemented.

Dear President-Elect Obama,

I am writing to express my concern about the Bush Administration's 11th hour attempts to strip the Endangered Species Act.

Under the new regulations, federal agencies involved with projects such as new highways, bridges, dams and airports can self-regulate to determine the threats posed to imperiled wildlife, a move that poses grave threats to wildlife. These agencies not only lack the expertise to determine whether federal projects poses a threat to endangered wildlife, they have a built-in conflict of interest.

Dear President Obama, We have to work to protect those endangered creatures that live around the world. These are not just animals you can freely dispose of without consequences. These amazing animal live their lives as a creature of earth just as we do. No one decide that we should be extinct so why should we have the power to enact genocide on a animal species. Every species on the planet contributes much to keep our planet healthy and alive.

Dear President Obama, I recently heard about the documentary film The Cove and was alarmed to find out that more than 20,000 dolphins and porpoises are brutally killed each year off the coast of Japan. In addition, Japanese consumers are being sold dolphin meat, containing dangerously high levels of mercury, often labeled as whale meat. I ask that you urge the Japanese government to revoke permits that allow Japan's Fisheries Agency to continue this heinous, dangerous and illegal practice. I also urge American leadership to ensure that the International Whaling Commission includes the proper management of dolphins and porpoises and a comprehensive plan to stop the slaughter of dolphins in Japan. Your immediate action is needed. Sincerely, Lara Sciarretta
