Support Global Elimination of Measles

The United Nations set an ambitious goal: reduce global measles deaths by 90 percent by 2010. Thanks to hard work by a coalition of international organizations including the World Health Organization, nearly 700 million children have been vaccinated, and measles mortality has fallen by 78 percent worldwide in less than a decade. Every region except Southeast Asia reached the 90 percent goal two years ahead of time.

But while countries continue to make progress, the momentum has slowed. In Southeast Asia with heavily populated India, Indonesia and Bangladesh, measles mortality has dropped just 46 percent -- jeopardizing the achievement of the 2010 goal.

We are at a critical point in the fight against measles, which is among the world's most contagious viral diseases and still kills 450 children each day. If we fail to vaccinate all children, we will face a threat of resurgence. We can knock it down, but unless we knock it out, it comes right back.

Voice your support for the WHO's aggressive fight to eliminate measles and reach the 2010 goal.
Dear [Decision Maker],

I am writing today to encourage you to continue to support the aggressive fight against measles, one of the world's most contagious diseases and one of the leading causes of death among children worldwide.

All regions, with the exception of Southeast Asia, have achieved the United Nations goal of reducing measles mortality by 90% from 2000 to 2010, two years ahead of target. Vaccinating nearly 700 million children against measles, through large-scale immunization campaigns and increased routine immunization coverage, has prevented an estimated 4.3 million measles deaths in less than a decade.

But Southeast Asia may jeopardize achieving the 2010 goal. Delayed implementation of large-scale vaccination campaigns in India, the country with the majority of measles deaths, is largely accountable for this lack of progress. Reaching the 2010 goal will also require strengthening disease surveillance systems to rapidly detect and control outbreaks.

Please continue to support measles vaccination and work to achieve the 2010 goal.
