Bogue Inlet PierWe support the efforts of the Town of Emerald Isle to ensure the perpetual existence of a fishing pier in Emerald Isle. We understand that it will probably take the collective efforts of the Town of Emerald Isle, Carteret County, the State of North Carolina, the North Carolina Aquarium, and the Federal government to accomplish the desired outcome. We encourage all of these organizations to be an active participant in arriving at an acceptable solution.

Fishing piers throughout North Carolina are fast disappearing. The financial reality in today’s coastal real estate market is that ocean fishing piers are likely to be lost forever unless a public entity acquires and operates these facilities.

Bogue Inlet Fishing PierOcean fishing piers are important to the local population, but are used mostly by day and overnight visitors to the area, much like State and Federal parks throughout North Carolina. The retention of a pier in Emerald Isle would provide access to the ocean for recreational fishing, parking and access to the ocean for people to enjoy the public beach, an adjunct facility for the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, and a research location for the Marine Science departments of several of the State’s major universities.

Please make every effort to make this project a reality.

11,953 4:33 pm PDT, Jun 18   Summer D Jacksonville and Emerald Isle North Carolina I have spent my life on the Emerald Isle pier and on the beach. We used to own a trailer less than a block away and just sold it. Emerald Isle means so much to my family and I and losing the pier would tear so many memories to shreds. The town will do whatever it needs to do to save the pier-- it provides money, tourists, and days of enjoyment for the young and old alike. Thousands come each year from all over the US to fish on the Crystal Coast, and a vast majority fish on our Bogue Pier. Losing the pier would take its toll on the city's economy, income, and give EI's pride a major beating. I know all of the pier employees and selling the pier would rid them of the jobs they have grown to love. I would do anything to grow up, have kids, and show them where Mommy spent her childhood. These words are meek and are spoken by only a teenager, but I hope that they have impacted you to think twice about disposing of the main source of pride for Emerald Isle.
11,952 12:47 pm PDT, Jun 11   John McArthur Willow Spring North Carolina My first memories of the beach are at the Indian Beach Pier. Born in 1966 and sad to see our beaches consumed by condos. I hope my kids get to experience the joy of catching a fat croaker or sitting out there at night waiting for that rod tip to bounce.
11,951 10:57 am PDT, May 27 Mr. Todd Webster King North Carolina I have been coming to the beach since I was a child to fish on the pier. My oldest son has had his times here, and my toddler is about to have his first adventure on the NC coast this June. Please leave this pier so that I may pass to my sons what my father passed to me.
11,950 5:36 pm PDT, May 22 Mrs. Fonda Ferguson Sandy Ridge North Carolina I have grown up fishing at Emerald Isle as well as all my family. If there are no piers left nobody will have much to do. Retired people will want to fish as well as visitors like my family.

11,943 7:21 pm PDT, Mar 28   David Monroe Emerald Isle North Carolina The town must keep the pier. It is part of the town's heritage and past. Do whatever is neccessary to keep it.
11,942 9:11 am PDT, Mar 22 Mrs. Anonymous front royal Virginia came to the pier on vacation once and loved it. Want to come back to experience the same wonderful time we had with the fishing and camping together.

11,940 8:07 am PDT, Mar 20 Dr. melissa blythe emerald isle North Carolina keep the peir, its been there longer than most of us. Locals and tourist love it,not everyone wants the Island to turn into a city, take the condos to AB or something.
11,939 1:29 pm PST, Mar 8   Tom Triplett Hickory North Carolina I fished from the pier with my grandfather as a kid and would hate to think of all the kids to come that will never get the chance to fish with their dad or their granfather. Keep that pier
11,938 12:55 pm PST, Mar 7 Mr. Clyde S. Triplett Granite Falls North Carolina I have been coming to bogue island for recretation and fishing since being stationed at Camp Lejeune and Cherry Point in 1962. I still bacation there every year and plan to continue. I love the area and especially love the pier where I have met many people and made many friends over the years. If the fish aren't biteing you talk to your neighbor, if they are biting you laugh and celebrate every fish caught. How many places are left where you can strike up a conversation with a perfect stranger and two hours later go to dinner with a new friend. All the other piers are already gone, Please don't loose this one too.

11,933 4:45 am PST, Jan 13   David Duek Jerusalem   Fishing piers are a quality public recreational space of the maritime culture and for all the citizens of a city to enjoy, and it doesn't have to involve consuming something. People can come and enjoy fishing, relaxing or just contemplate at the view being over the water. Piers are magical places.

11,917 7:30 am PDT, Oct 27 Ms. Tyronda King Port Saint John Florida do we really need more condos? last i checked developers couldnt get people to purchase the condos that are already in exsitance, and most of my friends that have condos are trying to sell the one they have and go back to renting an apartment until they are in the position both financially and mentally to purchase a house. so the purpose of building these condos are for what? so they can stand empty? for them to attempt to sell them for 500,000 usd only to realize that no one can afford to buy at that price and then knock the price down by more than half? doesnt make sense. FIRST sell the condos that are already out there. SECOND find a new location, and stop tearing down piers and displacing wildlife, and natural beauty.
11,916 4:43 am PDT, Oct 27   Bill Yeater Port Orange Florida
11,915 1:13 am PDT, Oct 22   Cyndee Yeater Port Orange Florida I just visited this area this past weekend, and thought the Bogue Inlet Pier was the highlight of our trip. The pier was filled with people, and the fish were piled high on the cleaning tables. This would be a tragedy to lose this pier. Please keep it open. I plan on moving to this area, and the pier was a big factor in our decision. It just has to stay!
11,914 3:55 pm PDT, Oct 18   Mark Pickard Chapel Hill North Carolina Dear Powers to Be that can Save Bogue Inlet Pier, I have lived in NC my entire life. (46 years) and use to have a trailer in Camp Oceam Forest right by Bogue Inlet Pier. I have fished on this pier and all of the other piers that "USED" to be on the 18 mile stretch of island from Bogue Inlet to Fort Macon. I am a passionate fisherman. I love to pier fish, surf fish and boat fish. I am considering to move to the coast in the next few years and have always had the Emerald Coast at the top of the page of consideration. Since the Triple S, Sportsman, Emerald Isle, Iron Streamer Piers are all gone, the attraction to the Emerald Coast is not as strong as it use to be. IF Bogue Inlet Pier goes then you can bet that I will not be moving to this area. And speaking for many other people they are not headed that way either. I know that $$$ is the root cause behind the others going down and the storms that keep hitting the coast over the years can sure make an owner of a pier want to give it up when there is no insurance or outside help to rebuild, but NOT everyone that wants to go to the coast wants to go just to seat in a Condo that use to be a pier. Many people will sell and leave the area if there are no piers in the Emerald Isle area. Also the many people like me, that are looking to retire at the coast will be going to Wrightsville Beach and south or Ocracoke Island and north. Piers offer an alternative for someone that does not have a 4 wheel drive truck or is handicapped or is too elderly to run a boat. On a pier you can be in a wheel chair and still enjoy fishing. I do not understand how anyone that knows anything about the aging and longer living baby boomers can justify having ZERO piers on a coastline as beautiful as our Morehead City/Atlantic/Indian/Bogue Beaches. It just does not make sense. I support any effort to keep the Bogue Inlet Pier standing for all to use in the years to come. I feel like the state of North Carolina should support this with my tax money. After all the wasteful spending on things that I can not even begin to mention over the years, what a noble thing it would be for our Great State of North Carolina to mark our Piers as Endangered Species and safeguard them with some of our tax $$$. Well that is my 2 cents worth. I hope the Powers to Be are Listening. Best Wishes for the Pier, Mark Pickard
