the london bridge whitegrounds skatepark

london bridge age restriction petition

Target:
to make the skatepark open to all ages , all the time.
Sponsored by:
at the minute , if you are over 18, you can only skate the white grounds skatepark at london bridge between 6pm and 8pm on weds. if you go down there at any other time you will be turned away from the facility . the reasoning from the area managers is;
"In the case of Whites Grounds, we are not permitted to allow unaccompanied adults on the site at any time as young people.
If a young person was to be assaulted or groomed during our supervised sessions, we would be held accountable."
having a fixed age restriction at a public skatepark , in my experience, is unheard of. so in short , please vote to try and change this policy and let the skateboard community of the uk/london enjoy this park on any day , and at any age.

I think this whole thing is crazy. especially as the only time I would use this park is between 1-2 on a weekday during my lunch hour. as kids should be at school at this time what is are the "supervisors" doing at these times?

"Unaccompanied adults" ??? What does this even mean? I'm 28 years old and have been skating for 15 years, does this mean I have to be accompanied by a child?? Surely I shouldn't have to pick up a lonely under 18 year old off the street just to enter a skatepark? "Hey kid! I'll give you a fiver if you hold my hand whilst I gain entry to skate?" YOU HAVE TO BE JOKING, THIS IS COMPLETELY NONSENSICAL.

I support, no restrictions!

This ban on over 18s is excluding many passionate skateboarders in London from enjoying one of very few skate parks of good quality.

No other skatepark does this and i know of no cases of grooming, that could happen anywhere. The fact that people of all ages mix in skateboarding is positive it shows a lack of prejudice.

ffs, just let people skate, man. I can understand the need for vigilance, but this is a ridiculous knee-jerk reaction to the actions of a couple of isolated incidents. surely more adults around = less chance of predators, more chance of kids telling someone if they are being hassled?

I know I'm a damn Kraut, but me and some guys up here (TRAP skateboards, etc.) use to skate this park sometimes with tons of joy. So please open it all the time to let us conquer it forever! ;)

there arnt enough sporting venues in the country for people of all ages to practice there sporting talents as it is without putting age restrictions on who can and cant train in there desired sport, this is discrimination at its worst, the government and counsel should be ashamed at what there doing!!!!
# 1,708:

Very upsetting to discriminate against age in such a way. Any sport should be encoraged to all.

This is absolutely outrageous! Are they saying everyone over 18 is a peadophile! Can't say i'm surprised though, society seems to have developed a sinister histeria about potential molesters, and seem to automatically sexualise children in the process. If social services did their job properly we wouldn't be in the situation where we are turning good people away from a 'public' skatepark! Please sign this petition so we can banish these creepy jobsworths!

Skateboarding has never had rules or restrictions! It is an activity that is enjoyed by all ages. Restrictions will only cause a upwore! People who skateboard can't expect not to hurt themselves. Injury is going to happen! Live with it. You don't make skateparks out of pillows do you! Who ever came up with this restriction is a paranoid halfwit! -Liam Cooper-

I dont live anywhere near london, i am a manchester skater but this is a disgraceful rule, how can u say an adult, a person recognised by our government as being a responsible enough person to vote needs to be accompanied by... another person to skate, children should be accompanied at skateparks as its the children who cause accidents, by running around, cutting in front of other people etc, adults in skateparks are the responsible ones, yet you try to remove them ?? its a stupid rule and seriously needs to be rethought.

I've been skating for the past 15 years, in all parts of the world and I haven't heard of anything so radiculous....What is the world coming to...UNBELIEVEABLE!!!!
# 1,696:

Utterly utterly ridiculous. I have pioneered for skateboarding for the last 12 years and have travelled all over and never ever have I heard of anything so completely ridiculous in my whole life. Skateboarding paedophiles. Yeah right since when ever has anything ever happened? How many skaters turn pro under 18. 3% I think you'll find. What other sports have this restriction ? none. Its like saying under 18s shouldn't play golf. Its an adult game. Surely on this basis a golf course is far more dangerous I mean there's bushes aren't there. oooooooh. Fine noone for kids to look up to , no skate etiquette, its gonna be a park with kids sitting on there boards rolling down the ramps and standing at the bottom of them. Just watch there'll be some horrific collisions, fractured skulls because theres no order. why not make it under 10s. What a waste of space!!!!
# 1,695:
2:20 am PST, Nov 20, Rick Standley, United Kingdom
Insane! This rule implies that anyone over 18 who skates is a paedophile. What's going on???
# 1,694:

its freaking stupid the kids are probably safer with adults there anyway

This rule is Ridculous, Most skaters start young, but the ones that have the passion carry on skating into adulthood like myself. There's not many places for skaters to go these days, even southbank has halfed in size over the past few years. the only rule for the park should be, your allowed in with a skateboard. skaters stick together and places that we skate, we share.

that is the stupidest rule i have ever heard, the fact that most under 16 year olds should be in school until around 3:30 in the week meens that it should be over 18's all day until then in the week if you really must have the rule. also, why do adults need supervision, why not make the children have a supervisor, or get there parents to sign a release form, thats what the local parks around where i live did to get around the problem.

Ha ha this is absolutley silly. The management at this particular park obviously know very little about the sport their facility has been built for. Unfortunately skateboarding is going to become more and more like this. I say keep it real stick to the streets. Maybe it would be more constructive to petition UK skate industry to completley boycott this park. No tours, no comp sponsorships, no mag coverage. Skateboarding belongs to skateboarders, this park could be wiped off the skating map if we took the right approach.

What makes a skatepark any different from other public sports grounds such as swimming facilities, football clubs, playgrounds, etc.. I don't think people ever have their i.d. checked going into those types of facilities, so why the difference for skateboarding?
# 1,655:

I have been skateboarding for the past 16 years and have never experienced a rule such as this. If it were not for the help and encouragement from older or more experienced skaters I would not have progressed within the sport or had half the fun I have over the years. If this sort of thing carries on then I won't be able to take my children skateboarding in the future.
