We, the Undersigned, endorse the following petition:

Please deny KVWPP and Desert Claim Wind Power Project

Target: Christine Gregoire, Governor, State of Washington
Sponsor: Cliff and Tina Sands
  • Signatures: 350
  • Goal: 1,000
  • Deadline: 9-30-2007
The Governor of the State of Washington has before her a decision whether to override local county government's careful consideration and denial of wind power projects that will greatly impact many neighboring residents.  These projects are being proposed in the northwest end of the Kittitas Valley - the Kittitas Valley Wind Power project (KVWPP), and the Desert Claim project applied for by EnXco.

Horizon Wind Energy (a Portuguese owned company) is trying to have their wind power project approved by the non-elected Energy Facility Site Evaluation Council (EFSEC) by pre-empting a Kittitas County land use decision.  In the local permitting process, Horizon walked out when minimal setbacks were requested to reduce the impact on the residents of the community.

This same company planned and built a very large wind power facility (the Wild Horse Wind Power Project owned by PSE) using the very same local land use permitting process.  This is an issue of proper siting of wind power projects so they do not negatively impact the community on whom they are being imposed.

We are not suggesting that EVERY proposed wind power project should be built or that NO wind power projects should be built.  The issue is siting and the protection of residents that will be forced to live next to these types of projects.

We are asking for signatures to request that the Governor deny the pre-emption of the County's carefully considered denial of the applications to build the KVWPP and Desert Claim wind power projects, these two specific sites.

346 7:25 am PDT, Sep 24 Mr. Anonymous Bellevue Washington Dear Governor Gregoire, The Valley will be negatively affected if you uphold the recommendation of EFSEC and approve the Kittitas County Wind Power Project. "Community Support was a key factor in approving this project." " This project has not been supported by hundreds in this community from the beginning. There have been hundreds of letters opposing the project and hours of public testimony where the majority of the opinions were opposing the location of the Wind Farm.
345 4:25 pm PDT, Aug 23   Anonymous Ellensburg Washington One wind farm is already one too many! Only a handful of residents see the $1.60 credit on their power bill - but we ALL have to look at the ugly thing! No more please!

330 4:14 am PDT, May 21 Ms. Dona Tracy Osterville Massachusetts Industrial wind power is a sham perpetuated by greedy developers based on fear of global warming, misinformation and hidden monetary windfalls to the developers that will come from the public's pockets. Wind power will do nothing to halt global warming much less take any fossil fuel burning power plants off line or put them out of business. The public has not asked for these projects yet the developers simply take their land and precious protected wildlife and wildlife habitat. They also divide entire communities. That is simply wrong. What we need is conservation now and the development of alternative energy sources that will help not harm our precious and beautiful America.

327 3:07 pm PDT, May 19 Ms. Anonymous Oak Harbor Washington Please consider placing this facility in a less populated area, preferably East of Ellensburg
326 12:47 pm PDT, May 19   Pam Fulton Ellensburg Washington Wrong location for this windfarm; they should be located east of Ellensburg where residents are less impacted by their presence. Don't destroy the view, this is one of our Valley's greatest assets!

324 12:00 pm PDT, May 18   Patricia Collins Seattle Washington Govenor, When the local government has taken the time and expense to determine that this is NOT good for the area and environment, how can a project be considered, and especially by an outside country? When are we going to wake up and consider what is best for our environment and not look for the almighty dollar as the end result? Please veto this and send the message that your concern is for the environment, the habitat of the wildlife and those that live in this area.
323 7:46 am PDT, May 18   Jim Hagstrom Seattle Washington
322 7:29 pm PDT, May 17   Ronald Kohler Covington Washington These are horribly huge devices that have no reason to deface this pristine area. It will kill hundreds of bats, and trillions of insects over time further affecting thre bats.
321 12:27 pm PDT, May 17   michele santos Comerio Puerto Rico
320 10:59 am PDT, May 17   Gloria Lindstrom Ellensburg Washington Millions of years ago the Mt. Stuart Range moved into its position as the crowning backdrop of the Kittitas Valley. It is a dominant feature of the Cascade Range and valley views. Never place an industrial wind farm in its unique view scape. Never place an industrial wind farm in an avian migratory route. Never place an industrial wind farm where bird and bat studies are inadequate. Never place an industrial wind farm close to where people live. Listen to our County officals -- this wind farm does not belong where sited.
319 5:57 pm PDT, May 15 Ms. Joan Hunter Maple Valley Washington Iam very much against this project.
318 12:55 pm PDT, May 15   Gayle Dormaier Ellensburg Washington Placing windtowers in a scenic location surrounding existing homes is the wrong place, period. And, lets be clear about one thing, it all boils down to money. The wind farms want to come in, put up the towers as cheaply as possible, sell them to a foreign buyer and move on. The Governor wants the federal incentives given for green energy. Do you think either have the best interest of the residents of Kittitas County in mind? Come on, Gov' prove me wrong.
317 10:58 am PDT, May 15 Mr. Anonymous Kirkland Washington I do not live in the Kittitas Valley but enjoyed my time attending CWU and the natural beauty of that area. I am strongly urging Gov Gregoire and other elected officials to support the local community and future generations from the negative impact these projects will have on the area.
316 12:18 pm PDT, May 14 Mr. Brian Combs Maple Valley Washington I believe this project would have an adverse effect on the ecosystem in the area.
315 9:26 am PDT, May 14   Anonymous Puyallup Washington
314 1:19 pm PDT, May 13   Charles S. Dougherty Ellensburg Washington I believe very strongly that local government should be responsible for making decisions that directly affect the local citizens. Please do not overide the decisions that have been by our elected county government officials.
313 10:04 am PDT, May 13   Kenneth Matney Ellensburg Washington Good idea, bad location. The bigger issue is local goverment vs un-elected, regulator. Please don't sign this to prove how "Green" You are to Eastside supporters. Thanks, for your consideration.
312 1:12 pm PDT, May 12   Tracy Pozil Seattle Washington
311 11:06 am PDT, May 12   Regino Martinez Woodinville Washington Good idea, bad location. I'm sure there are other viable alternatives, in terms of location. I trust our elected officials will listen to their constituents and make the right choice.
310 1:17 pm PDT, May 11   Bill Rossman Renton Washington
309 1:10 pm PDT, May 11   Anonymous renton Washington
308 1:06 pm PDT, May 11   Ryan Halvorson Maple Valley Washington I trust that the local govenments knows what is the best interest of the community.
307 12:33 pm PDT, May 11   Stacy R Hunter Enumclaw Washington This is a bad location and would be bad for the whole area. There are many locations and communities that want these so why force them on those who oppose them. The real issue is not the wind mills though it is who has the right to decide what happens in our community. We have local government for a reason and they have decided that this project is not a good idea. In my opinion this is a classic arguement between the local vs. states rights or states vs. federal for that matter. I believe that the decision that is best for the people that will be most impacted has been made and the state should respect that decision and not overrule the county.
306 12:21 pm PDT, May 11   John E Hunter Enumclaw Washington I own property in the area that I would like to build on. I have been waiting to see what happens with the wind mills. If they go in I will not being building and will be lucky to sell my property for what I owe on it. No matter what they say it will effect the property values.

304 3:36 am PDT, May 11   rhonda fazenbaker Mount Holly North Carolina
303 12:32 pm PDT, May 10   Ron and Janet Nelson Easton Washington on a personal note, As residents who are planning on transitioning to the lower county, the Ellensburg area, our real estate decisions will be affected by the proximity of either of these two windfarms. Who would want to live near an industrial complex such as this? As retirees we cannot afford to risk our most important asset decision on the area near the windfarms. We feel real sympathy for those who already live in the area so close to these proposed windfarms (you really have to look at them as one project since they are so close to each other )and stand to lose bigtime in terms of the value of their property and quality of life if the project(s) is approved. Please deny both the KVWPP and Desert Claim Wind Power Projects. Thank you.
302 9:38 am PDT, May 10   Anonymous seattle Washington I am a staunch supporter of alternative energy and remediation of environmental damage that has occurred through fossil fuel and nuclear fuel consumption. However, it seems that placing windmills on farms in the windy areas east of Ellensburg, through subsidizing farm owners who might WANT to have windmills on their land, would be a much better solution that badly damaging and corrupting land that is owned and protected by property owners who are maintaining a healthy wildlife ecology in the area. Windmills: great! Location: bad choice!

Please deny KVWPP and Desert Claim Wind Power Project

The applications for the KVWPP and Desert Claim wind power projects have been careully and thoroughly considered by the Planning Commission and County Commissioners of Kittitas County, the location of their proposed siting.  Both of the sites have been found to be not suitable for this kind of development.

Now the corporations are trying to get the State to override the County authority and approve their projects in spite of their devastating impact on the residents of Kittitas County and the fact that both projects face strong community opposition.

We need your help to let the Governor know that the corporations are lying when they tell her the county is in favor of their projects and that they will have no negative impact on us.

We also need to let the Governor know that the residents of the State of Washington are not in favor of her overriding carefully considered county and local government land use decisions.
