Take Action for Better Transit Alternatives!

Target: U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: Environmental Defense Fund
With gas prices at over $4 a gallon, more and more Americans are turning to public transportation for their transit needs.

However, public transit agencies all over the country are being forced to cut back services due to state and local budget constraints.

Urge your Senators to join the House of Representatives and address the exorbitant gas prices by expanding public transit choices for all Americans.

Dear [Senator],

The era of cheap oil and cheap transportation is over. I hope you will join other Senators to take action to expand travel choices for all Americans at a time when gas prices are over $4 per gallon.

The best way out of America's expensive transportation trap is to promote smarter policies to fix our broken and inefficient transportation system. The problems of oil dependence won't be addressed by opening up new areas off America's beaches for oil drilling. While speculators may play some near-term role, prices are likely to stay high in the long-term as long as global oil demand remains strong.

Even now that fuel is coming down in price, I would still love to be able to save wear and tear on my vehicle and relax in the early morning and late afternoon, instead of having to battle traffic twice a day. My public transportation company does not, however, serve my outlying area at times that would enable me to get to and from work, nor does it provide for late buses if I were to have to work overtime unexpectedly. Since my taxes go in part to subsidizing mass transit, I would like to be able to take advantage of it.

Yes, gas prices have fallen greatly, but we still use too much oil, and public transportation would help.
