Ask Your Senators to Oppose Keystone XL -- Again

In a stunning display of the power of the oil and gas industry, the U.S. House has again inserted language into a bill that would give immediate approval to the Keystone XL pipeline.

If it's built, the 1,700-mile pipeline would transport up to 35 million gallons of oil every day from Canada's tar sands -- one of the dirtiest energy sources in the world -- to refineries in Texas, where the majority would be exported to global markets instead of supplying the United States.

Not only would the pipeline disastrously increase our dependence on filthy fossil fuels; it would also directly threaten at least 20 endangered species (from whooping cranes to pallid sturgeon), pristine wildlife habitat and freshwater supplies for millions of people.

The American people have already spoken on Keystone -- we don't want it pushed through. Please tell your senators to hold the line and oppose this destructive legislation.
SUBJECT: Please Oppose the Keystone XL Pipeline -- Again

Dear Senator,

I am writing to ask you to oppose language inserted into the House version of the transportation bill that gives immediate approval to the Keystone XL pipeline.

[Your comments will be added here]

The proposed pipeline would cross U.S. wetlands, rivers, agricultural and drinking-water sources and wildlife habitat. An earlier Keystone pipeline has already leaked 14 times since 2010, and the Keystone XL is certain to spill as well. The risks of approving this pipeline are simply too great. Indeed, many landowners are resisting eminent domain because they don't want their land polluted by spills.

Canada's tar-sands development is one of the most destructive and dangerous activities on Earth. Extracting this oil destroys boreal forest and wetlands where migratory birds breed. And burning the oil will create massive additional global warming pollution that will commit us to devastating climate damage.

If this weren't bad enough, the Keystone XL pipeline, with its terminus at the Gulf of Mexico, will allow for export of dirty tar-sands oil to the global market, meaning that the American public will bear all of the risk of the pipeline merely to line the pockets of big oil companies.

I urge you to reject the amendment to the transportation bill to approve this terrible pipeline.
