Ask Congress to help get junk food out of schools!

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Stir It Up America
As parents, we try hard to ensure that our children eat healthy meals. ItÂ’s an uphill battle, because there is too much junk food in our schools and there are not enough opportunities for physical activity. And our kids are paying the price with their health.

Currently, low-nutrition foods are widely available in school vending machines, cafeteria snack lines, at fundraisers and school stores. The most common items sold out of these venues are soda, other sugary drinks, candy, snack cakes, and chips.

Over the last two decades, rates of obesity have doubled in children and tripled in teens. And children's poor diets are negatively affecting their health. Alarmingly, studies show that as a result of obesity-related diseases this generation is likely to be the first in centuries to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents.

Urge your Senators and House Representative to cosponsor the "Child Nutrition Promotion and School Lunch Protection" bills. These bills would remove junk food from our schools by updating and strengthening the nutrition standards for foods sold on school campuses, improving the health of America's children.

Dear Congressional Leaders,

As parents, we try hard to ensure that our children eat healthy meals. It’s an uphill battle, because there is too much junk food in our schools and there are not enough opportunities for physical activity. And our kids are paying the price with their health. As a parent who cares deeply about my children and my nation's future, I urge you to cosponsor the "Child Nutrition Promotion and School Lunch Protection" bill to be introduced this fall by Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Representative Lynn Woolsey (D-CA). These bills would remove junk food from our schools by updating and strengthening the nutrition standards for foods sold on school campuses outside of the federal school meal programs.

Improving school nutrition helps students learn - and doesn't hurt the bottom line. A study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Centers for Disease Control found that schools can switch to selling healthy foods and beverages without losing revenue.

The federal government invests significant resources in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast programs and has strong nutrition standards for those meals. Selling low-nutrition foods through other venues in schools undermines that investment, parents' ability to feed their children a healthy diet, and children's health.

I am sure you share my concern that all our children grow up to be strong, healthy and productive adults. Your support for children is very important to me and other parents in our state. Again, I urge you to cosponsor the "Child Nutrition Promotion and School Lunch Protection" bill. I look forward to hearing your position on this legislation.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]

The US is plagued by obesity and the diseases that come with it. We need to teach our children how to keep their bodies healthy from the start - not *after* they have made themselves sick from a lifetime of bad eating habits.

Schools are suppossed to serve healthy, nutritious meals! Some children only get one meal a day, at school. Junk food is not acceptable. If parents choose to keep it in their homes, that is fine, but school is suppossed to promote health and education... And even Health education.

I am young and still in school, and getting junk food or genetically modified foods out of school is important. It will reduce childhood obesity.See,some kids don't get the proper nutrition at home so they should get it at school.

It is imperative that proper nutrition be provided for children. It is important for proper growth as well as healthy study and learning environment. This in mind, all 'junk food' must be restricted from vending machines. Fruit and vegetable juices as well as water bottles should be available for drinking from machines. Healthy snacks must be the only snacks allowed on school grounds.

Junk food in schools sends a negative message about the importance of nutrition. Schools should focus on teaching in the cafeteria as well as in the classroom. Please take every opportunity to educate!

Frankly, I'm appalled when I see the glowing vending machines, filled with sodas and packaged garbage laden with transfatty acids, sugars and salt, lining the walls of the high traffic areas in schools. What a paradox: our country faces a health crisis in part due to poor nutritional habits, while we face an education crisis where schools feel the need to subsidize coffers with vending machine death money. The cafeterias will sell extra deserts for extra cash; an unnamed fast-food chain will supply a greasy lunch option to students for nominal mark-up over the cafeteria lunch. How can we expect children to first, resist the temptation of the food, and second, take seriously the infomation they learn about healthy eating habits when the schools supply it?

In this time of an escalating health crisis with diabetes rates soaring and childhood obesity at an all time high, it's time to take direct action and remove these nonnutritious, empty calorie foods from our childrens' schools!!

Junk foods (including mainsteam school "meals") are, simply, unhealthy. They are full of fat, salt, dyes, preservatives, hormones, hydrogenated oils and unnecessary/possibly damaging sweeteners (among many other questionable ingredients). Say thanks to PepsiCo and CocaCola!
