Tell Congress to Finish the Job for Toy and Product Safety

We have momentum for making toys and products safer for our families, including a product safety bill now in Congress that will stop secrecy about problem products -- making public shoppers' complaints about toys and other goods. This is one important victory, and we couldn't have done it without you.

But time is running out to get the bill to the President. Congress leaves in less than two weeks for summer recess, and they must finalize the bill before then.

Industry is pulling out all the stops to stall the bill. We need your voice now to pass this bill and make sure that all toys meet safety standards before they reach store shelves, ban certain dangerous chemicals from children's products, and protect strong state laws.

The clock is ticking -- let's not miss this opportunity for real change. Tell your lawmakers to make toys and products as safe as possible, before Congress adjourns for its summer break!

Dear [Decision Maker]:

Toys and other consumer products that are dangerous to children are still being recalled at a record pace. Please send a strong product safety bill to the President before August break.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has been under-funded and under-staffed for too long. It needs effective tools and sufficient resources to help ensure that dangerous toys, cribs and other hazardous products, most manufactured abroad, do not wind up on American store shelves and in our homes.

I urge you to finish the job and get the product safety bill to President Bush's desk before the August recess.

Please fight to retain:

* Testing Toys to the Latest Safety Standards: It is critical that all toys be tested and certified to comprehensive safety standards before they can be sold.

* A Ban on Certain Dangerous Chemicals, called Phthalates: The final bill includes a provision eliminating certain phthalates in children's products and child care articles, which will serve to significantly curb children's routes of exposure to these potential reproductive system toxins.

* States' Ability to Enforce Product Safety. Oppose any eleventh-hour attempts to add a new provision to prevent states from addressing new toy and product testing problems that could arise.

* A Strengthened All Terrain Vehicle Standard. We support strengthening the Senate provision that makes the voluntary standards for ATVs mandatory and requires those entities selling ATVs in the U.S. to be subject to ATV action plans. We support the inclusion of increased safety measures to make ATVs safer for all consumers.

We have waited long enough to be safer! Help make 2008 the Year of Product Safety Reform, and get the Consumer Product Safety Bill to the President's desk immediately! Thank you.
