With the shared understanding that educating girls around the world can help eradicate poverty, Hain Celestial® personal care brands Alba Botanica®, JĀSÖN® and Avalon Organics® have joined forces with CARE as Founding Partners of the Empower Her through Education campaign.
A key priority of the Empower Her through Education campaign is to support school attendance in areas where child marriage presents a major barrier. A 2012 United Nations report on child marriage paints a grim picture:
- 1 in 3 girls in developing countries (excluding China) will likely be married before age 18
- In 2010 more than 67 million women ages 20-24 had been married as girls
- Between 2010 and 2020, an estimated 142 million additional girls will be married before age 18
The United States has historically advocated against child marriage and the Senate has voiced bipartisan condemnation of child marriage through passage of the International Protecting Girls by Preventing Child Marriage Act in 2010 and 2012. In 2015, we need action to end this widespread human rights violation.
Please join the Empower Her through Education campaign by asking Secretary of State John Kerry to make our bipartisan voices become a global initiative and investment. We ask Secretary Kerry to prioritize this issue and use the diplomatic and financial power of the United Sates to protect these at-risk girls.
