Stand Up for Refugee Resettlement

  • by: HIAS
  • recipient: U.S. Congress

Since our founding, the United States has provided refuge to people fleeing persecution and violence. As Jews, we know how deeply important the U.S. Refugee Resettlement program has been in our own history. And we know how critical it is to extend that welcome to others who have been forced to flee their homes. We do it not because the refugees are necessarily Jewish, but rather, because we are Jewish.

However, there are currently efforts in Congress to shut the door on our proud history of welcoming refugees into the U.S. Call on your elected officials to fight this anti-refugee sentiment in Congress.

Right now, there are more refugees and displaced people in the world than at any time since World War II. Daily news headlines feature heartbreaking stories about families fleeing places as diverse as Central America, Sudan, Myanmar, Iraq, Colombia, and Syria. The global community has committed to resettle only 1% of these 60 million refugees and displaced persons.  We should be looking to do more—not less—to address the global refugee crisis.

Help HIAS fight outrageous legislation that seeks to end the U.S. Refugee Resettlement program and to urge Congress to support even more resources for refugees worldwide.  With your help, we can ensure that America fulfills its legacy as a place of refuge and safety.

Dear [Your Representative]

Since our country's founding, the United States has provided refuge to people fleeing persecution around the world.  I urge you to support our proud heritage as a generous and welcoming nation, and I implore you to fight back against any efforts in Congress to curtail or halt refugee resettlement in the U.S.

There are currently about 60 million refugees and displaced people in the world, which is more than at any time since World War II.  Most of these people will never be able to return home, and the global community has only committed to resettle 1% of the world's refugees.  Resettlement is critical in giving refugees a chance to restart their lives in freedom, and as the United States, we should be looking to do more—not less—to address the global refugee crisis.

As your constituent, I urge you to oppose any efforts that aim to suspend refugee resettlement in the U.S.  Instead, I hope you will support efforts to ensure that America fulfills its legacy as a place of refuge and safety for the world's most vulnerable people.
