Recall Dangerous Chicken and End Overuse of Antibiotics in Meat Production!

As part of our ongoing tests of meat and poultry, Consumer Reports has found a dangerous strain of Salmonella in a sample of Foster Farms raw chicken. The strain we found matches one of those associated with the current outbreak, which has now sickened close to 300 people in 17 states.

Demand an immediate recall of potentially dangerous chicken, then take it a step further. Antibiotic resistant strains like the strains found on Foster Farms chicken, have been linked to the overuse of antibiotics, including antibiotic use in agriculture. We've asked Trader Joes to stop selling meat from animals routinely fed antibiotics. Now its time to ask USDA and the FDA to step in.

Dear [Decision Maker],

I support an immediate recall of all Foster Farms chicken linked to the current, dangerous salmonella outbreak and limits on the overuse of antibiotics in agriculture generally.

Just this week, chicken contaminated with resistant bacteria has sickened hundreds. Despite nearly 300 illnesses reported in 17 states and a continuing outbreak, Foster Farms has not issued a recall.

More broadly, the overuse of antibiotics in meat production is linked to prevalence of antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria -- a danger to human health. USDA and FDA should work together to resolve the immediate problem but also reduce antibiotic use overall.

Make sure this meat comes off store shelves immediately, then move to reduce overuse of antibiotics.

Sincerely,
