Don't Sacrifice Wildlife to Secure the Border

Over a quarter of the U.S.-Mexico border lies within public lands that endangered and threatened species like ocelots, jaguars and wolves need to survive. This includes hundreds of miles within the National Park system alone, running through such national treasures as Big Bend National Park and Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument.
Border security enforcement activities both place a tremendous burden on federal land management agencies and cause lasting damage to wildlife and habitat. We don't have to sacrifice our wildlife to protect our borders. Urge your U.S. Representative to co-sponsor the Borderlands Conservation and Security Act of 2007 (H.R. 2593) to help alleviate the harmful impacts of border enforcement activities on public lands, wildlife and borderland communities.

Please consider the damage that the wall will do to the animals that live in this area that are already endangered. We will be cutting off the wildlife from their migrating paths and from necessary water source. I understand we want to protect our borders but lets try to find a better way.

We reject a one-size-fits-all program dictated from Washington to construct a damaging border fence along the U.S./Mexico border while waiving landmark environmental and public health laws. We want a process for ensuring border security that: includes full and open public hearings, good-faith consideration of public comments, alternative methods of providing border security, and ensures protection of some of America's most valuable bird and wildlife habitat along the border region, including key habitats protected by the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge, the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, the Tijuana River Reserve Important Bird Area, and the Sabal Palm Audubon Center and Sanctuary. ??We need a program to secure the border while protecting the environment and respecting border communities, not a narrow-minded plan that ignores the will of the people. The answer is not a 700-mile border fence, and the answer is not to waive critical environmental and public health laws like the Endangered Species Act and the Safe Drinking Water Act. We at the National Audubon Society urge you to support Representative Raul Grijlava’s Borderlands Conservation and Security Act (H.R. 2593) We cannot thank you enough for your time and consideration.
