European Commission: Impose trade sanctions on Switzerland for its discriminatory ban on niqab and burka

The Swiss region of Ticino just approved with 65% of votes the ban on publicly wearing a niqab or burka, under a fine of up to 10,000 euros. This ban condemns Muslim women who wear these clothes to live locked up at home, because of the great risk of being subjected to an unbearable economic penalty.

Even if it's considered that the niqab or the burka are degrading to women, the prohibition of these clothes and the imposing of fines it’s not the right solution to help Muslim women to freely decide their clothing. The prosecution and fines involve the disappearance of these women from public life, preventing them to access basic services such as health care and education. To help them we should implement educational measures, promote active integration and help women whose freedom is infringed by their husbands or families, but never criminalize women because of their clothes and enclosing them at home.

Because of this attack on religious freedom of these women in Switzerland, we must act at European level to prevent xenophobic and islamophobic attitudes starting to grow from the heart of the continent. Join me and ask the Director General of Trade of the European Commission to take steps to impose trade sanctions on Switzerland in response to this attack on women and religious freedom.

It’s time to stop Islamophobia in Europe and to start encouraging in its place the implementation of integration policies that really help Muslim women. Together we can make it.

Dear Jean-Luc Demarty, Director-General for Trade, European Commission,

Please take the necessary steps to impose trade sanctions on Switzerland in response to this attack on women and religious freedom with the banning of the niqab and burka in the region of Tizino.
