Take Action: Global Action for Trash Free Seas

Just five countries - China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand - currently account for almost 60 percent of the total leakage of plastic into the ocean, due to a mismatch between their ability to produce waste and their capacity to manage it.

On November 10, the Trash Free Seas Alliance®, an assembly of industry, conservationists and others will convene in Atlanta, Georgia. It's a critical moment for stemming the tide of plastic pollution of the ocean.

If we can make quick strides in those five focal countries, we can reduce plastic ocean pollution worldwide by 45 percent.

Industry has a critical role to play to jump start this urgent effort with a half million-dollar commitment of support.

Please join me in calling on industry leaders to make a half million-dollar commitment to trash free seas.

Plastic ocean pollution is accelerating. If trends continue, plastic waste in the ocean could double by the year 2025. Just five countries - China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand currently account for almost 60 percent of the total leakage of plastic into the ocean. In these countries economies and incomes are growing, but the investment in waste management infrastructure hasn't kept pace with the increased production of trash.

A landmark study shows that if we can make quick strides in those five focal countries, we can reduce plastic ocean pollution worldwide by 45 percent.

The study stresses that we must take action immediately to turn the tide.

Accordingly, we're calling on forward-looking corporations to join existing industry members of the Trash Free Seas Alliance® and collectively pledge an initial half a million dollars to help jump-start this urgent process. It would be an auspicious step for the Alliance to be able to agree to this jumpstart grant at its November 10 meeting.

By 2025, for every three tons of finfish swimming in the ocean, there could be one ton of plastic in marine waters as well. That's bad for business, bad for people and bad for wildlife. Industry can lead the way toward trash free seas by making an immediate financial commitment to get this initiative off to a strong start. We the undersigned urge you to make the vision of trash free seas a reality with this initial commitment.

Thank you.
