Gabrielle Giffords was an exemplary member of the House of Representatives. As a representative for Arizona, her political accomplishments included fighting to pass bills related to mental health, helping expand access to health care, and vastly improving education.

Unfortunately, one year ago, a gunman opened fire at one of Giffords' frequent congressional outreach meetings, shooting Giffords and 17 others. Six of the victims were killed in the shooting, while the rest were seriously injured.

Giffords has shown unbelievable strength and determination while coping with her injuries and has made a remarkable recovery thus far. She has decided to resign from Congress in order to focus on her recovery process.
