Stand Strong for Children's Health Coverage

There are nine million uninsured children in America today – that’s one in nine children. Sadly, uninsured children live sicker and die sooner than insured children. No child should have to suffer because they don't have access to the care they need!

There is some good news. Late last month, the House and Senate passed bills that could extend health coverage 4.2 million and 3.2 million previously uninsured children and pregnant women respectively.

Although these bills still leave millions of children without health coverage, they are a step in the right direction of reducing the number of uninsured children in America.

Unfortunately, it’s not yet a done deal. These House and Senate bills will now "go to conference" where their differences will be resolved and be put to a final vote. As if that wasn’t enough of a hurdle, President Bush has already threatened to veto this child health legislation.

Please sign the petition urging Congress to stand strong for children and enact legislation that would extend health coverage to millions of children and pregnant women!

Dear [Decision Maker],

As one of your constituents, I write on behalf of America's children who need your help NOW. Nine million children in America are uninsured, and another baby is born uninsured every 47 seconds. Without comprehensive health coverage, children are at risk of living sicker and dying sooner.

I support comprehensive health coverage for ALL children and pregnant women in America and I urge you to do everything in your power to ensure that the SCHIP package that comes out of conference contains the nearly $50 billion in House-passed new funding for child health coverage and all the House-passed policy improvements.

As a Member of Congress, you have the opportunity and obligation to stand up and make a difference in the lives of our children, our future. The American people overwhelmingly support health coverage for all children now, and I stand with them. A vote against SCHIP reauthorization will be considered a vote against children.
