No More Pay Discrimination on the Basis of Gender

Women may lose $434,000 in income, on average, over a 40-year period due to the career wage gap. That's why it's so critical that Congress adopts the Paycheck Fairness Act. It's already made it through the House. Now it is time for the Senate to act!

The Paycheck Fairness Act puts the burden on employers to show that the difference in compensation between two similar positions is based on something other than gender. It gives the federal government a more proactive role in preventing wage discrimination, prohibits employers from retaliating against employees who share salary information, and sets aside money to train women on how to negotiate salaries.

In today's tough economy, legislation like this takes on added importance - which makes it critical that the Senate act swiftly. Urge your Senators to support the Paycheck Fairness Act to end wage discrimination today.
Dear Senator [Name],

The Paycheck Fairness Act (S.182) was introduced in January 2009 by then-Senator Hillary Clinton and Rep. Rosa DeLauro to strengthen the Equal Pay Act of 1963. The House has passed it on January 9th, but it is still awaiting Senate approval.

The bill expands the types of remedies available under the Equal Pay Act and tightens a very broad employer defense. In addition, the Paycheck Fairness Act improves the government's ability to study and identify pay disparities and provides guidelines and incentives for employers to voluntarily eliminate pay disparities among their employees.

In today's uncertain economic times, paying women the salaries they deserve is even more critical. That's why I urge you to ensure the Senate acts swiftly to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act.
