Tell ExxonMobil to Stop Discrediting Climate Science

As world leaders and business around the world tackle the challenges of global warming and begin to take action, fossil fuel companies can and must acknowledge both climate science and the global political consensus to act on climate change. Unfortunately, new analysis by the Union of Concerned Scientists shows that eight major fossil fuel companies have failed to make a clean break from climate denial or disinformation, and none of them are planning for a world free of global warming pollution.

It's time for us to hold corporations accountable for climate deception.

ExxonMobil scored low in the category of rejecting disinformation of climate science and policy. CEO Rex Tillerson consistently misrepresents climate science by casting doubt on its accuracy in public statements, even though ExxonMobil's own scientists confirm the science.

Tell ExxonMobil you are fed up with attacks on science. We can't afford to waste any more time. ExxonMobil must stop blocking progress on climate change.
Dear Mr. Tillerson,

I am writing to join the flood of concerned citizens and investors demanding you to stop disparaging climate science in your public statements.

The latest Union of Concerned Scientists report reveals that your company earned a ranking of "Egregious" for failing to reject disinformation of climate science and policy. You consistently misrepresent climate science by casting doubt on its accuracy in public statements, even though your own scientists confirm the science's validity.

For instance, at your company's annual meeting in 2015, you argued that the world should wait to improve its understanding of climate science before taking action, stating, "we don't really know what the climate effects of 600 ppm [carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere] versus 450 ppm will be because the models simply are not that good." While some uncertainties remain, there is no doubt that climate impacts will be substantially greater with such higher concentrations. And at this year's annual meeting, you again claimed that climate models are inaccurate.

You must stop attempting to discredit and disparage the scientific evidence on climate change, and instead use your leadership role at ExxonMobil to get the company on the right track to help meet the climate goals outlined by the 2015 United Nations Paris Agreement, which nearly 200 countries endorsed.
