Women pay up to 48 percent more for private health insurance than men for the same policies. Insurers also routinely deny coverage to women with "pre-existing conditions" - which include pregnancy, c-sections, and in some cases, domestic violence and rape.
The reforms being advanced by the White House and Congress would:
- Make "gender rating" illegal.
- Prevent insurance companies from denying care on the basis of pre-existing conditions.
- End "rescission," or the insurance industry practice of canceling someone's coverage when they get sick.
- Set limits on out-of-pocket expenses.
- Provide competition and choice for women in the individual insurance market.
Urge your Members of Congress to fix these antiquated policies by passing real health insurance reform this year!
Dear Members of Congress:
For years, America's health insurance companies have treated being a woman as a pre-existing condition. Women pay 30 - 40 percent more than men for the same health insurance policies. Women are subject to denial of coverage from pregnancy, c-sections, and even domestic violence.
We deserve to be protected from practices like "gender rating" and "pre-existing conditions" that unfairly discriminate against women.

It's time we stood up to insurance companies and passed real health insurance reform. We can't afford to wait another year.
Sincerely,
