The Next President Must Make Alzheimer's a Thing of the Past

Target: The Next President of the United States
Sponsored by: Alzheimer's Association

To the newly inaugurated 44th President of the United States:

As our President, you must lead the nation to make Alzheimer's a thing of the past.

Every 71 seconds, someone in America develops Alzheimer's disease. Without your leadership, Alzheimer's will rob one in eight of the 78 million baby boomers of their memories, their independence, their lives as they know them.

Alzheimer's is fatal for people who have it and devastating for their families, friends and caregivers. Alzheimer's costs billions of dollars in lost productivity and puts an increasingly catastrophic strain on our healthcare system. And it is only going to get worse.

Millions of Americans are waiting to hear: What is your plan to attack this public health threat facing our country?

We believe your plan must contain these elements:
- An immediate increase in federally-funded medical research;
- Access to affordable health coverage for people living with Alzheimer's under age 65;
- A Medicare program that better meets the special needs of people who suffer from Alzheimer's and other serious medical conditions; and
- Caregiver support services and long-term care coverage for people with Alzheimer's disease and their caregivers.

Alzheimer advocates call on you to create a responsible plan to end Alzheimer's now.

Brain disease is devastating and costly in both monetary terms and emotional terms. With our aging population, it make both economic sense and health sense to do everthing we can to stop or minimize this awful illness.

I do believe the next president should make this a priority because of how devastating the disease is to all involved. Although I do support federally funded research, I do not support embryonic stem cell research. There are other ways to do research such as increasing awareness and availability of the donation of cord blood from newborn babies for the sake of ending this horrible illness.

As the Baby boomers age there will be an overflow of people with Alzheimer's. Both my parents had it and it is horrible to watch and be part of for any family! Something has to be done. There is no care that can fully handle this disease and no one should have to suffer with this! Proud people - helpless! This has to end!

With family and friends who are suffering and who have suffered with this terrible disease I am urging you to do the right thing and help to end this fast growing tragedy. It not only robs those who have the disease from thier memories and futures, but it alos strips thier dignity away. It also robs those who care about and support them- even though they don't know or remember it!- of time. Time that could be spent making and KEEPING those memories.. If you think this won't happen to you or your family.. you are soooo wrong. It can happen to anyone at any time. No matter your social status or gender or race... * Please help our loved ones. They might not remember what our government did for them, but we will!
