Speak Out Against the Latest Attack on Roe v. Wade

The North Dakota Legislature is gearing up to sign into law a bill that defines a fertilized human egg as a person. This state law is widely viewed as a vehicle to challenge the Supreme Court's 1973 decision legalizing abortion.

The House passed H.B. 1572 by a vote of 51-41, sending it to the Senate for a vote. The bill is backed by a Colorado-based pro-life group that defines "personhood" as the moment the egg is fertilized. North Dakota's own Right to Life has disagreed in some instances with the personhood movement over tactics and strategy.*

This new legislation could hamper access to birth control and emergency contraception, condemn doctors who perform in vitro fertilization to the status of murderers and allow the government, not women, to make critical decisions about healthcare. It could also raise issues like counting the embryos in the U.S. census and assigning social security numbers to fertilized eggs.

Let the governor of North Dakota know that you do not support sweeping, nonsensical laws such the "personhood" legislation. And ask that if passed by the Senate, he does not sign the bill into law.

Dear Governor Hoeven,

As a concerned citizen of the United States, I am writing you to express my disappointment and anger over North Dakota's recent House ruling to give fertilized human embryos personhood status.

If passed by the Senate and signed into law, this legislation could have sweeping negative consequences for women and families in North Dakota. Defining a fertilized embryo as a person could hamper an individual's access to birth control and a couple's access to in vitro fertilization.

North Dakota should set an example for the nation by defending a woman's right to make her own choices when it comes to healthcare and family planning. Should this bill be passed by the state Senate in addition to the House, I implore you not to sign it in to state law.
