Support Early Education

Target: U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: Pre-K Now
Across the country, more than 70 percent of three and four year olds have no access to publicly funded early education programs. Half a million of these children come from low-income families.

The U.S. House of Representatives has already passed a bill that would provide billions in funding for early childhood education, raising the level of participation in these early learning programs among disadvantaged children. But right now, opponents are trying to block this crucial funding in the Senate.

Investing in early education is smart. Research indicates that every dollar spent on high-quality pre-kindergarten is worth $7 in taxpayer savings and economic productivity. Bolstering early education today will go a long way toward ensuring a sound economy for years to come.

We can't let Congress miss out on this opportunity. Send your Senators a strong message to support this crucial early education funding!

Across the country, more than 70 percent of three and four year olds have no access to publicly funded early education programs. Half a million of these children come from low-income families. But state budget cuts across the country have led to reductions in pre-kindergarten and other early learning programs.

The House of Representatives has already passed the Early Learning Challenge Fund (ELCF), an important part of the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act (H.R. 3221). Now it is on the Senate's agenda, awaiting your vote. This legislation would provide crucial funding for high-quality early education, at a time when our economy needs it most.

The ELCF would require qualifying states to set quality standards in early education programs across the country and raise the level of participation in these programs among disadvantaged children. An investment of this nature would help thousands of our nation's three and four year olds enter school ready to learn.

The fund would provide grants to proven programs. We know that only high-quality early childhood education yields the large return on investment and positive outcomes for families and communities that both taxpayers and policy makers are seeking.

After substituting in a kindergarten class I see a real need for pre-school availability for all children.

Well, the back to work welfare "reform" is not working and this is the blow-back. Welfare mothers can't pay for everything and work at a low wage job. Their children suffer. Thanks, President Clinton. Support for the poor just isn't popular anymore, is it?

One of the wisest investments America can make to create a strong economy is in early learning programs for children. Research clearly demonstrates the significant benefits reeped by preparing kids early for the challenges of educational opportunities to come. We need to prepare our children to succeed and graduate from high school. Then they can make confident and informed decisions for post high school education. Please support H.R. 3221 and pass legislation to fund this program.
