Stop Food Irradiation in Australia

Foods that are imported into Australia have been approved to be treated by the Irradiation process, which involves the use of highly radioactive material. With proven deterimental health effects we are finding that foodstuffs are not clearly labelled. People may already be consuming items that are not specifying the irradiation process.
It has been clearly proven in studies dating back to the 50's that irradiated food can cause rare forms of cancers, premature death, nutritional deficiencies, liver damage, stillbirths, reproductive problems, chromosomal damage and radiactivity. FSANZ have given permission for herbs, spices, herbal teas, black teas, oil seeds and nuts. Approval was also given for tropical fruits. Packaged foods are to labelled but we are unsure how loose items such as fruits are being labelled. The labelling is also worded in a way the consumer may not understand, instead of clearly stating this food is irradiated. Even the international Radura symbol that identifies the process is misleading, it resembles a budding flower, instead of a more apt one like a skull and crossbone. Please sign this petition to show you are against this poisoning of our foodstuffs, and that products must be clearly stated "irradiated".
