Write for Rights: Tell China to Protect the Rights of a Uighur Activist

Huseyin is a member of China's Uighur minority and a human rights activist. In 2001, he fled China after being in jail for supporting the religious and political rights of the Uighur people. The United Nations recognized him as a refugee.

Huseyin arrived in Canada and was granted citizenship with his wife Kamila and their children. When he and his family visited Uzbekistan in 2006, the police in China found out and asked the police there to arrest Huseyin. They did, and then sent him to China.

The Chinese authorities accused Huseyin of offences related to his activities in support of Uighur rights. They gave him no access to a lawyer, to his family, or to Canadian officials. They threatened him and forced him to sign a confession. They refused to recognize Huseyin's status as a Canadian citizen, and they did not allow Canadian officials to attend his trial. It was not conducted fairly, and resulted in a sentence of life in prison in China, where he remains today. His wife and children don't know if they will ever see him again.

Your voice is needed now! Please join Amnesty International's global letter-writing event Write for Rights to speak up for Huseyin Celil.
Dear President XI Jinping Guojia Zhuxi,

I respectfully request that you take actions to:

- Ensure that Huseyin Celil is allowed regular visits from his family and Canadian consular officials, adequate exercise and nourishment, and prompt medical attention to any health issues which may develop while in prison.

- Request that Huseyin Celil be given a retrial in full compliance with international standards. He must be allowed to speak on his own behalf and with his own lawyer in attendance.

- Insist that if the Chinese government is unwilling to allow a retrial in full compliance with international standards, then Huseyin Celil must be released without delay or conditions on his freedom.
