Help Ban Inhumane Procedures That Produce Foie Gras!

Target: US Congress
Sponsored by: American Humane Association
To produce foie gras, ducks and geese are subjected to the painful and blatantly cruel procedure of force-feeding.

They are confined to small pens and have metal pipes shoved down their throats as handlers pour in cups of food twice a day. This horrific process causes a diseased liver condition called hepatic lipidosis, in which the liver swells to approximately 10 times its normal size.

Many ducks and geese that do not make it to slaughter often die from ruptured throats or bacterial infections or suffocate on their own vomit.

California and Chicago have already joined seventeen countries including Germany, Italy, Norway, Poland and Austria in banning the force-feeding practices that produce foie-gras.

Legislation has been introduced in Connecticut, Philadelphia, Illinois, New York and New Jersey to ban the inhumane production of foie gras. Now, every state needs legislation that does the same.

As if the cruelty of the process wasn't enough, researchers have recently found a link between foie gras and a little-known disease called amyloidosis. Amyloidosis, which may be transmitted to people who eat infected foie gras, can affect various organ systems in the body, such as the heart, kidneys, nervous system and gastrointestinal tract.

Let your senator and assembly member know this inhumane treatment must not continue.

Dear [Decision Maker],

As your constituent, I urge you to support legislation that bans the inhumane process of producing foie gras!

This important bill would prohibit the force-feeding of birds for the purpose of producing foie gras. Through the cruel production methods frequently used, the ducks and geese are contained in small cages and force-fed through metal pipes. The birds often suffer needlessly before making it to slaughter, often dying of bacterial infections and ruptured throats.

It is important that you support this legislation because it would alleviate the inhumane treatment of animals typically used in foie gras production. Importantly, the bill does not ban foie gras but instead prohibits the buying or selling of it when it comes from a bird that has been force-fed. Eleven countries -- many of which consume duck and goose liver -- have banned force-feeding to produce foie gras, and six countries have recognized force-feeding to be inhumane under their countries' animal welfare laws.

[Your comment]

The legislation is pending in the Assembly Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee. Please encourage the Committee members to report the bill favorably!

Sincerely,
