Seals Still Slaughtered in Canada - Keep Up The Fight!

Target: Stephen Harper, Prime Minister
Sponsored by: Care2

Canada's seal hunt is the largest deliberate slaughter of marine mammals in the world. Every winter in Eastern Canada, harp seal pups are left alone and vulnerable on the ice while their mothers search for mates; during this time, they are mercilessly slaughtered for their pelts. Appallingly, the Canadian government subsidizes this hunt.

As if this wasn't bad enough, this week Governor-General Michaelle Jean visited an Inuit village and ate raw seal heart after slicing into a freshly slaughtered seal. Attempts to validate these actions by claiming that hunting seals is a traditional way of life are unfounded.

This isn't about small town survival or native culture, it's an industrial machine that is killing for profit. Despite the European Union's recent ban on seal products, Canadian officials are still pushing for the hunt to continue.

Tell Prime Minister Harper that Governor-General Jean's actions do not speak for you. The world will no longer stand for this cruel and senseless hunt!

Dear Stephen Harper,

I am disgusted by the merciless slaughter that you call the Canadian seal hunt. For no significant economic gain, hunters kill up to 300,000 seals in just one year. The vast majority of these animals (96 percent) are less than three months old and completely defenseless.

Continuing to ignore the brutality and waste inherent in this industry is simply unacceptable. It is time to transition Canadian sealers into new and more rewarding industries that do not involve cruelty to animals.

Furthermore, I am appalled by Governor-General Michaelle Jean's recent actions. Even if hunting seals is part of a native cultural practice, it does not justify mass slaughter for the commercial market. Please be aware that the Canadian people do not stand behind the Governor's actions, or the hunt.

I urge you to act immediately to end this abuse and restore Canada's reputation as a humane and ecologically responsible society.

Sincerely,

If someone kills your child, brother, sister, mother or farther what is the feeling you get? They have the same feeling too. Think a minute....

Prime Minister these are babies with no fair fending for themselves, not adults the white furred babies will cry because they see their family and loved ones being slaughter. Blood and guts around them, and they don't know what is happening. This is not the way of the inuit tribe, this is far from it completely. These men are lazy cowards and the only reason so many of the fishermen do it is because they are sociopaths, brain washed into this by obsevation. Why do you continue to support this? And why don't you give us a real reason for doing so. In all respect to the work you have done in your life. BE A MAN.......!!!!!!!

the seal hunt should change the way it hunts. It should be done so that the seals bear the meast amount of pain possible at the time of death - smashing its brain while it tries to escape is torture. them being shot would be easier on the seal. And, this seal hunt should have some control (we are worried about the population). Can't the govt export chicken or other farm animals to the inuit if they are starving? Can't the govt start a seal farm where seals are slaughtered (hence making their death experience the least horrific)? I don't think people should eat seals by the way unless they are in famine.

I'm not sure if you have personally witnessed the slaughtering of these poor young, and beautifuly animals. I can't imagine anyone being able to justify clubbing a baby seal as a grand tradition. I am absolutely discausted by what governor-general Michaelle Jean displayed. By trying to relate to a few hundred people in a small region who have known the same thing all their life, she has deeply offended and hurt the rest of Canada. I lost a great deal of respect for her. I hope that she is truly alright with the decision that she made.

Stop this disgusting slaughter! As a citizen of Canada I am outraged that my country favors this kind of sick cruelty for pure profit. The actions you take today will result in the outcomes of the future- please do the right thing and stop the Canadian Seal Hunt forever.

Why should Canadians pay taxes so a few so-called hunters can slaughter helpless baby seals?! If the govt does not care about animal rights, at least they should care about our country's reputation. There is no excuse for continuing it year after year.
