On average, women in the U.S. earn only 78 cents for every dollar earned by men. That's 22 percent less than a man makes! Research shows that, just one year out of college, women working full time already earn less than their male colleagues do, even when they work in the same job. Ten years after graduation, the pay gap widens.
Even more depressing, it's taken us 40 years to make a 12-cent gain to get 78 cents; at age 66 and older, women are twice as likely as men to be poor. Decades of earning lower wages result in significantly lower Social Security benefits, retirement incomes and pensions, leaving women with less money to retire on.
Has it happened to you -- or to a daughter, granddaughter, mother, niece, girlfriend, wife or sister? Together, we can fix the problem! The Paycheck Fairness Act would create stronger incentives for employers to follow the law, empower women to negotiate for equal pay and strengthen federal enforcement efforts. Urge your Senator to support the Paycheck Fairness Act today!

As a working woman and mother, I personally know that women are still being paid less than men for the same jobl When I was a manager, it was openly discussed to male managers. We MUST change this!

Maybe we need to pay all of our female congresswomen 22% less. Lets not stop there, maybe female supreme court justices, female doctors, judges etc.

Current labor statistics show a higher proportion of those employed are women. Now, more than ever, work should pay!

The Equal Pay Act is essential for our country's economic viability. Ignoring it allows unscrupulous companies to - in effect - unfairly suppress adequate compensation for our country's work force. It affects entire families, as women now equal or exceed men in the workforce. People should not be paid more than their work qualifications and job performance demand. But neither should CEO's/Shareholders be allowed to hide behind the LACK of an Equal Pay Act to unfairly strip workers of their deserved wages, in order to inequitably pad the coffers of these CEO/Shareholder's. That is FASCISM, and history has shown how damaging that is. Such pay disparity poses a serious economic and political threat to our nation's health.

I think it is about time that women get paid an equal wage as men do for the same work. In many cases, I believe women work more productively because they know how tough it is to survive in the workforce and need the work more. Men tend to think that they can always find a job somewhere else. This economy is forcing everyone to think in terms of reality.
I am in the workforce and need a steady job to survive. I was single and needed to support myself, and now I have a husband who is disabled which means doctor's bills, hospital bills, and lots of medications to pay for. There is no way we can live on just one income. It is even hard to live on two incomes.

When I was about to graduate with my BA degree and good grades in 1964 I interviewed at the college job fair with a major national retailer. I was complimented on my deportment and neat penmanship and told that new male hires started at $110 a week and females at $85 for exactly the same job. The actual ratio of female to male earnings may now have improved to 78/100 but we have a long way to go.

There is neither justice nor fairness in a situation that pays one group of people less than another when they are doing the same job. Fix this!

The jobs that are typically held by women pay less than those typically held by men. But let's not forget that the men who do have entry-level jobs are not making enough to support their families. That's why the women are willing to take jobs at all. So, THOSE entry level jobs need to have higher pay as well. It's not just about women. It's about families who are struggling to survive on low income. Until this era, employers never had the NERVE to pay such low wages to adults.

I have been employed full-time since 1978 with two of the top employers in the US and have consistantly witnessed first-hand the enormous disparity in women's salaries. It is time to put an end to this inequality and reward the hard-working women of America, many of whom are the sole support of single-parent households.
