A PETITION TO FIGHT CORRUPTION IN THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS AND TO BRING JUSTICE FOR THE PEOPLE

A PETITION TO FIGHT CORRUPTION IN THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS AND TO BRING JUSTICE FOR THE PEOPLE BY ESTABLISHING AN INDEPENDENT DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE AND AN INDEPENDENT INSPECTOR GENERAL’S OFFICE AND BY ELECTING THE ATTORNEY GENERAL

We, the undersigned, seek to fight corruption in the U. S. Virgin Islands and bring justice for the people. We hereby petition:

A. The U.S. Congress and President of the United States to enact legislation amending the Revised Organic Act of 1954 (1) to create an independent Department of Justice (DOJ) and Inspector General’s Office (IGO) thereby eliminating a Governor’s authority to supervise, control, or interfere with them, and to appoint, hire, or terminate any employee, including the Attorney General; and (2) to specifically allow for the electing of the Attorney General;

B. The Legislature of the Virgin Islands (1) to adopt a resolution fully supporting this amendment; (2) to enact legislation in furtherance of this amendment; (3) to establish independent, annual funding through the General Fund or other source for both the DOJ and IGO; and (4) to eliminate all sections of the V.I. Code that grant authority to a Governor to appoint/hire/terminate the Attorney General and any employee in the DOJ and IGO, including, but not limited to, assistant attorney generals, auditors, and investigators; and

C. The Governor and Delegate to Congress to fully support these changes to the law.
