The African Forest Elephant, through DNA analysis has been proven to be a seperate and distinct species, not subspecies, from the African Bush Elephant. The African Forest Elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis) is considered Vulnerable. All three extant elephant species need to be protected; the African Bush Elephant, African Forest Elephant, and Asian Elephant. |
