Viagra But Not Birth Control? Tell Insurance Companies to Cover Contraceptives!

Target: U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: NARAL Pro-Choice America
98% of American women use some form of birth control during their reproductive years. Yet not all insurance companies cover prescription birth control. What's worse, some of the insurance carriers that DON'T cover birth control DO cover drugs like viagra. Doesn't sound fair, does it?

Congress is sitting on a bill that would require health insurers that cover prescription drugs to cover prescription contraceptives equally. By guaranteeing that insurers cover prescription contraception to the same extent as other drugs, contraceptive equity laws help ensure women's access to birth control and ultimately prevent unintended pregnancies and reduce the need for abortion.

This sounds like a no-brainer. Employers and insurers that cover Viagra should cover women's prescription birth control.

Despite bipartisan sponsorship, the Equity in Prescription Insurance and Contraceptive Coverage Act ("EPICC": S.1214/H.R.4651) has languished in Congress since 1997.

As a result, only twenty-four of our fifty states require insurers to cover prescription birth control if they cover other prescription drugs. We've waited long enough! Sign the petition urging Congress to make prescription drugs and prescription contraceptives equally covered under federal law.

Dear Senator,

I am writing to urge you to cosponsor or support the Equity in Prescription Insurance and Contraceptive Coverage Act ("EPICC": S.1214/H.R.4651).

Women deserve equal treatment for health needs such as birth control. Without federal legislation, too many health insurance plans and employers will continue to treat women's health needs in a second-class manner, excluding contraceptives from insurance coverage. Women pay more out-of-pocket for their health needs than men do, in large measure due to the exclusion of contraceptives from so many plans. Women, not insurers or employers, should be able to make personal decisions regarding birth control for themselves. Moreover, improving access to contraception is the responsible way to reduce unintended pregnancy and
thus the need for abortion.

Please support this commonsense legislation and let me know your opinion on this issue.

Sincerely,
We signed the “Viagra But Not Birth Control? Tell Insurance Companies to Cover Contraceptives!” petition!

Birth control has uses and medical benefits besides prevent pregnancy. In my case - it reduces the number of migraines I have as well as controlling my fibromylagia, endrometrios, irritable bowel syndrome, and my severe PMS symptoms. Taking this kind of medication is the difference between being unable to function and being a productive member of society. I have heard of other women taking it for reasons other than pregnancy prevention. Insurance companies should have to cover it for this reason. Its ridiculous they cover will cover viagra but not birth control

The best way to avoid abortion is to provide safe, economical birth control methods to women. I think birth control should be FREE to all who want or need it. Insurance companies run by men provide low-cost Viagra to men but penalize women who need birth control. Where's the justice in that? I'm fed up with white males running everything: they have messed up the whole world. Tell them to step aside!

Viagra is meant to help out men in the bedroom. I don't think insurance would ever cover sex toys but they should at least cover birth control! It is almost assumed nowadays that young adult females, if not TRYING to get pregnant, are on some kind of birth control. To be frivolous and not cover the cost of birth control the insurance companies and the government has set themselves up to pay millions for babies of girls who didn't want to get pregnant. It is also overlooked on how many young girls try to raise the children they couldn't afford and end up either losing custody or giving them up into the foster care system.

I have health problems that require that I be on birth control. Yet insurance refuses to pay due to "it's moral standing". Too bad that their moral standing endangers my life and would only lead to yet another ectopic pregnancy. It's time for a change!!!

I see no reason why birth control shouldn't be covered by insurance. Especially if Viagra is covered. I don't see why cost should be a big deal, as surely, birth control is cheaper than health care for a child.

Birth control isn't just to prevent pregnancy. It can & often is used to regulate a woman's periods, to help prevent ovarian cysts, for women with endometriosis, etc. Some women have female problems & birth control helps lessen the symptoms of these problems.

I personally have made the permanent choice to not have children, but know many who would like them eventually but now is not the right time. That form of responsible decision making is increasingly difficult for people when the cost of birth control continues to increase and their pay rate does not. Abortion would be a moot point (except in cases of rape) if birth control were readily available to all members of society regardless of their socioeconomic status. Pushing for insurance companies to pay for birth control, as they do for most any other prescription, would start us down the road to success.

It's cheaper to cover birth control a women's whole reproductive life than to pay medicaid for a birth and then welfare for 18 years for one child. Save money in the long run and promote planned families. It's mostly middle to lower class women and families that would be helped by this bill. Help bring the gap between the rich and the poor and vote for this bill.

This is a no-brainer. What better way to decrease costs paid for unplanned pregnancies than to prevent them in the first place? It is ridiculous that men should be able to be covered by something as "frivolous" as Viagra, yet women are denied the ability to protect themselves.
