Share Your Broadband Story

Sponsored by: Alliance for Public Technology

Just as the United States built highways to connect people from one part of the country to another, broadband is the necessary connection to usher in the next era of prosperity and innovation.

The Alliance for Public Technology is sponsoring a contest to demonstrate this fact and raise awareness of the benefits of advanced high-speed internet access and the way it is transforming the lives of real people in real ways. Their goal is to encourage the universal deployment and adoption of broadband in the United States.

So share your story, and you could win $1,000 for first place, $500 for second or $250 for third. It's easy, just explain how has broadband changed your life in 50 words or more. For example, has broadband:

* Connected you with distant friends and relatives?
* Helped students collaborate?
* Aided you or your doctor in treating a medical condition?
* Been a tool for independent living?
* Leveraged your ability to make a difference in your life and the world?

Please note that by entering, you give permission to for Alliance for Public Technology to contact you, post your entry on their website and have it publicized. The first place winner will also receive a trip to Washington and a ticket to an Inaugural Ball.

The deadline is October 1, 2008, and you must be at least 18 years of age and a resident of the United States to enter.

For the full rules, visit the Alliance for Public Technology website.

Good luck!

I use it for multiple resources; bill-paying, international/national/regional/local news, kids' homework, etc. It's a godsend!

I have lived in most of the western U.S. during my life, and in Australia as well. I've made many friends during that time with whom it was very difficult to stay in touch. Broadband has made it possible for me to keep up with them and the goings-on in their lives, to see the places they travel. In the work world, I have become a far more effective and efficient worker by being able to use remote desktop protocol to access my workplace; I'm active in encouraging my co-workers to telecommute where possible, and to use technology for virtual collaboration. I'm also active in some non-profit groups, where every dime is precious. Being able to communicate quickly online, and enjoy the speed that broadband brings to that process, means that I can get a lot done in a short period of time between work and dinner in terms of distributing information and checking on progress. It also reduces the need for travel for face-to-face meetings, which helps save gas. Overall, faster and better Internet connectivity will help to improve human communication while helping reduce the need to burn fossil fuels by driving everywhere.

I've had the luxury of DSL access to the internet since 2003. This allowed me to work at home 3 or 4 days a week. This saved 2 hours of driving a day and enabled me to advance in my career by increasing the number of consulting projects I could manage in a year. I wish the USA had universal access to broadband and even higher speeds - we're behind other industrialized countires in that area too.

For awhile, I lived in a larger city with broadband access. It was incredible to me how much faster it was than dial-up. Unfortunately, now I live in a rural area where I only have internet access via dial-up. I am a student and it is very difficult to do the research necessary for my studies.

I actually work for a cable company, Comcast, so I am familiar with broadband. It is definitely a part of my life, and it is WAY faster than dial up!

My life would not be the same without broadband access. Because of it, I am able to work from home, operating my own business. Until a few short years ago, I worked in the corporate world. I struggled constantly to find quality childcare for my six children. I always felt torn between the need to provide for my family financially and the need to be there for my children and take care of them myself, instead of entrusting them to strangers. Now that I am able to work from home, my family is better off financially and emotionally. My children are so much happier now. My marriage is stronger now, too. None of this would be possible without broadband access.

As a hard of hearing individual communicating with friends & family by email is timeless. Using a web cam allows instant communication. I LOVE having a library in my home!!

I live in a quiet area on the west side of an island. I am home alone, so my internet is my way of staying sane. I spend evenings exerciseing my brain with reading, research, taking action on critical subjects, chatting in a game room and keeping in touch with friends afar. I would have gone out of my mind these past years since I have had internet and would have lost touch with so many friends. The most important reason I am so grateful to have my internet, is that it enables me to READ & KEEP LEARNING!

WithOUT broadband, I could not possibly keep up with the overwhelming amounts of incoming Activist material I receive daily. Nor coule I SHARE by forwarding many VERY important "newsletters" and other bits of information with friends and relatives who NEED broadband to adequately and rapidly RECEIVE these newsbits.

I dealt with a power outage for 4 days in my area and I realized the importance of broadband internet to be connected to the world for information that impact us on a daily basis. We have become so accustomed to using it when we want to that we have not realized that it no longer a luxury but a necessity for our daily lives to stay connect with everything that is going around us.

Right now, I'm attending college completely online. Broadband gave me the ability to do so. I also keep in touch with good friends and family through e-mails and chatting. It's my favorite way to communicate.

Having broadband connection has enabled me to get in touch and BE in touch with friends that would have otherwise been lost to me. I have a far better relationship with those family members that I can contact by e-mail than with those who don't have that capability. A broadband connection has put me in touch with people in places all over the globe -- with that friend I made while traveling in Spain, with a cousin who's moved from Georgia to Texas to Wisconsin, with fellow political activists who were recruiting volunteers right here in my own home town. My broadband connection has truly made all the difference in the world to me!

Without broadband it would be very difficult to complete assignments and even attend to some classes, because they are online. Broadband is something necessary now days to be educated and learn. There are many things that one can learn through the internet and broadband makes it so much easier.

Broadband hastens my connection with friends and family abroad. It also lends ease to my schooling. As a musician, the quality connection provided by broadband makes my band's music accessible to listeners without distorting the quality by buffering.

Broadband cable is used by all family members to stay informed of news, weather and, most importantly, it plays an extremely important role in my daughters' education. The local school district tends to assume that everyone in the district has cable access and homework is assigned accordingly. Having access to high speed internet, even though it is a significant cost to our limited family budget, has had a profound effect on the education of every family member. We can access information from all over the world and I am constantly amazed by the impressively informative websites that exist. We no longer have cable TV. It distracted my daughter from her school work and chores, and, the extremely biased news reporting and generally very low quality programming were also factors in my decision to dump it. Well rounded news sources are readily accessible on the web. High speed has made a huge difference as well. When we had dial up internet, we used the internet much less because it took far too much time to access websites and many sites, etc. were completely inaccessible through dial up. We already live in a global society, with high speed internet we can be active, informed and responsible members of our society. For the first time ever we can easily access almost every member of our government, giving us the potential for a more truly democratic society.

As an activist and a small business owner, broadband is the only thing that makes my work possible. Unfortunately, here at home, I do not have broadband, and it is only available to me on a limited basis when visiting friends. The amount of work that I can get done when I have access to broadband is astounding! What takes me all afternoon on dialup takes a mere fraction of the time on broadband. I can upload pictures to my art site on broadband that a dialup connection cannot even handle. I can reorganize my entire storefront in the time it would take me to do one section of it on dialup, and I can thoroughly research the articles I post on my conservation activist blog easily and swiftly. When I don't have broadband access I have to slog through my research, only able to collect the bare minimum of information necessary to make my point, and I am not able to express myself and reach out to other like-minded people in the way that I want to. Broadband access is essential to my work, and essential to the work of basically all self-employed small business owners. So many more people could become financially independant if they could only have access to highspeed internet! Broadband would also allow countless people to work from home and avoid the expensive commute, child care, and other expenses that come with commuting to work.

I don't have a story either, but I think that the playing field should be leveled, e.g. education, opportunity, and broadband access.

Living in a rural community, broadband allows me to fulfill my dream of working from home as a freelance writer and editor. I aim to help people through my writings about Alzheimer's disease and caregiving; because of broadband, my work is read by people across the globe. Outside of work, I've been able to raise money for Alzheimer's disease research and services by reaching out to friends and family with my broadband connection.
