Tell Congress to Protect Our Oceans

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Marine Fish Conservation Network
Our oceans are in serious decline. Overfishing, marine habitat destruction, coastal development, and pollution are pushing our ocean systems to the brink of collapse.

Urge your Representative to support strong marine protections. Ocean fisheries have significant effects on ocean ecosystems and are integral to national and coastal economies. That's why these activities have to be carefully managed.

In recent years, two national commissions have recommended strengthening marine protections. However, no action has been taken by the Federal Government to address this growing problem. Rather than building on the strengths of the current law, Congress is considering weakening longstanding safeguards, which would increase serious environmental threats to ocean fish and marine ecosystems.

Congress needs to know that we care about the health of our oceans and want them to oppose efforts to weaken marine protections.

Dear Representative:

I care about the health of our oceans and ask that you oppose any efforts to weaken marine protections. Two national commissions have recommended strengthening marine protections, yet some policy makers are trying to undercut important conservation measures in current law.

[your comment here]

Weakening existing requirements to protect and restore depleted fish populations would delay and jeopardize the recovery of vulnerable fish populations. This would harm the oceans and fishing communities. Furthermore, waiving essential requirements for public participation in fishery management decisions would eliminate important opportunities for local communities to have a say in federal actions affecting their lives and livelihoods.

I urge you to oppose any attempts to weaken conservation measures or eliminate the requirement that fishery managers assess the environmental impacts of fishery management decisions and give the public a say in the assessment process.

Thank you for considering these comments. The health of our oceans and coastal communities depends on your support.

Sincerely,

I find our oceans to be one of the most lovliest wonders in the world, full of mysteries and creatures that challenge our very imagination. Please don't pry that from us.

The ocean has a very delicate food chain and we our destroying it by the minute. All it takes is one species driven into extinction to create a dominos effect for all the rest. Still there is another problem here, the welfare of the people who depend on fishing for a living the government needs to step in and provide alterative jobs or a source of income for the low income areas that depend on fishing for a living.

You don't know what you've got until it's gone. Humans certainly follow a trend where we let things go until they can't get worse. We need to stop this trend and save the oceans. After all, where would we be without water??

This archaic behavior MUST BE STOPPED! Who do people think they really are? What kind of mind-thought does people like this have within, because it certainly is NOT animalistic~ for they have totally NO REGARD for animal life!!! GREED & selfishness is a generating force for such archaic behavior...How about we turn thier tools of slaughter on to those who perform such horrendous acts~ Let the 'hunt' begin...flip the boats that once did float, reverse wave activity within the seas til a swirling vacuum sucks every hunting vessel deep into the bowels of the earth, THEN let the hunt on heartless self-serving greedy humans begin~ all creatures that have beem preyed upon by the human_race may now vengefully gain control again~

Humans are endangering more than innocent animal lives by fishing, polluting, and ignoring our great oceans. If we don't start respecting our oceans, the earth will be changed forever, and not for the better. Now is the time to start the change to ensure healthy ocean waters, and preservation of the wildlife who inhabits it. We can not survive without our oceans. Take this seriously when making decisions that affect our waters!
