Tell Chairman Steve Munisteri: Reject Texas GOP's Anti-LGBT Platform

The Texas Republican Party just passed a platform supporting "reparative therapy" for gay people.

According to the platform language, the Texas GOP recognizes "the legitimacy and efficacy of counseling, which offers reparative therapy and treatment for those patients seeking healing and wholeness from their homosexual lifestyle." It's "treatments" such as these that prevent lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people from being open about who they are with their families and communities.

Demand that the Texas Republican Party reject this anti-gay platform and set a new standard of acceptance for the Republican Party.
Chairman Munisteri,

As a supporter of the Human Rights Campaign and equality for all Americans, I urge you to renounce your party's recent endorsement of "reparative therapy" for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

There is significant evidence that attempts to change sexual orientation or gender identity harm LGBT people. In fact, every major medical and mental health organization in the United States has condemned the use of "reparative therapy."

The American Psychological Association released a report in 2007 stating that there is very little sound research on sexual orientation change efforts. In fact, there is ample evidence that societal prejudice causes significant medical, psychological and other harms to LGBT people.

Please listen to important members of your own party including the Log Cabin Republicans and Metroplex Republicans--not to mention high profile, evolving and prominent members of the GOP like Chris Christie and Laura Bush.

Take a bold stand and speak out against this discriminatory new platform. Your LGBT constituents--including young people--deserve better.

The choice is up to you. I hope you stand on the right side of history.
